SLQ categorisation[edit]

Hi, thanks for your help mapping subjects to categories. It looks like you have an interest in trade unionism, so I've started up the bot again and uploaded all images in Category:Trade unionism of Australia. Let me know if there are any other categories you would like me to fill up. John Vandenberg (chat) 04:12, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John, thank you for your message and for starting up the bot. The photos from the SLQ are amazing and I'm glad all that history will be available in wikimedia commons. I think I have found most of the subject headings for Category:Trade unionism of Australia. So now I'm looking at workers in general- however I'm unsure about the categories. I've found 4 related categories: Category:Manual workers of Australia, Category:Construction workers in Australia, Category:Textile workers from Australia, Category:Rail transport staff from Australia. All of those would come under the Category:Manual workers of Australia. I'm not sure how the bot works, should I for example list a subject heading about rail workers under Category:Manual workers of Australia AND Category:Rail transport staff from Australia?

images of rail workers would definitely be placed into Category:Rail transport staff from Australia, and I think it is safe to assume that most images of rail workers will also be appropriate in Category:Manual workers of Australia. That sounds like a good scenario where two categories are needed.
Applying "too many" categories is better than "too few", as the bot logic usually refuses to upload images until there are more than four categories. The bot is able to refine categorised after the initial upload, so the mappings can be improved as we gain a better appreciation for how the State Library of Queensland subject headings have been utilised. I've done a batch of ~100 Category:Workers in Australia. Most of them are being categorised into finer-grained categories. In case you're not already aware, there are some very useful "Gadgets" that you can enable in your user preferences, such as HotCat which simplifies categorisation work. --John Vandenberg (chat) 09:39, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
