Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi, you have requested for renaming. But such a request is not consistent with renaming rules, look at Commons:File renaming . Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not English. Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages. For a change the language in name can ask the uploader of this file. But maybe he would like them to be in his native language? The uploader's will is most important.
I saw some files with your request were renamed by not experienced filemovers... But it wasn't correct. They shouldn't do this. Wieralee (talk) 10:10, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

@Wieralee: Thanks for notifying me. But the case is not 'English' that i have request for File renaming. I am native speaker of Nepali and i know that the requested file doesn't give exact meaning in Nepali too, so i request it to rename in meaningful English Name. • Sometimes you do not describe the photos... Sometimes you are only putting a name of the village/city in English... If the name is meaningless or ambiguous, change it, but do not change the language. The uploader wanted to keep his native language, respect it, please.

Instead of that I do not understand why you are trying to change the language... The searching machine is searching both: in names and in descriptions of the files. It is enough to change the description, for example:

|description={{ne|1=अर्घाखाँची}}{{en|1=Mountain trekking Arghakhanchi}}

Counter Vandalism Unit

Welcome, बिप्लब आनन्द! Now you are a patroller, you can now mark edits as patrolled. Here are some tips for you:

1. Use RTRC. It makes patrolling easier and faster. You can filter what edits can you see, such as unpatrolled edits. To install and use this useful tool, go to its documentation page.
2. If you know some good registered users, request the autopatrol flag for them at Commons:Requests for rights. This will help reduce the unpatrolled backlog.
3. Read the Counter Vandalism Unit page to learn more how to detect vandalism easier and faster. It also recommends you to use tools that is stated there. It also shows how many unpatrolled edits are there today (currently 1190238). This will help you in dealing with vandalism.

Hello Biplab Anand, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

mw.loader.load('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR

mw.loader.load('User:Majora/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.
