Re: Copyright vio[edit]

I noticed that you deleted my image [Image:HMCS Windsor (SSK 877)] because you said "Canadiam military forces images are for private use only". I agree with you, however if you check http://www.navy.forces.gc.ca/mspa_gallery/gallery_e.asp?category=2&page=3 you will see that the image is not copyrighted by the Canadian government. It is my image that is used on their webpage (among others). As I am the original photographer and copyright holder I am able to upload it on Commons. Copyvio images[edit]

Hello Bastique, I saw you changed these images from deletion request to copyvio. What's the further process after this? I'm not very familiar with the Commons-Guidelines, so what does this mean? Should they be removed from other wikipedias? --Boris23 20:40, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

check usage[edit]

Got it. I'm used to deleting really bad images (blatant copyvio, not used in any projects, etc.). So I'll keep in mind when I'm going around deleting next time. Thanks. -- WB 03:32, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quick French tip[edit]

Just to help you out, you sometimes use the phrasing "a la" for "there" or "over there", but this isn't used. Instead, you want to place "y" before the verb. You can read all about "y" and "en" here. Deco 03:57, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks (Essjay)[edit]

Thanks for the welcome back message; as for the Christian business, I'm a theology prof., but I try to keep most of the information related to that on my EN userpage, since there aren't really a lot of pages on Commons for me to edit where my background would be relevant. Kyiv[edit]

I can't imagine why You find it insulting, never the less I wholeheartedly apologize. I'm a native speaker of English so there could be some kind of misunderstanding, it was not my intention to imply that Americans are generally in any way more ignorant towards the rest of the world then any other fine nation. It's just that I have been told that in Canada the spelling Kyiv is more popular then in the US (probably due to a sizable Ukrainian minority). --Numerius Negidius 22:33, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Colors[edit]

A) I used Orange, not red. For that very reason. Go read Image:Symbol delete vote.svg for the explanation
B) Same goes for the blue one, and why it's not green.
C) I didn't go in and change all the users, only those that asked about it.
D) Some people appreciated my designing the pictures

Why do you have to be an ass about it? en:WP:CIVIL Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 04:48, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, these sort of icons have been used on Commons for some time. See Commons:Featured picture candidates Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 04:55, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A, B: The specific hue is immaterial - the colors (1) will become associated with something and (2) are distractingly distinct to everything else on the page (& if it really bothers you, you should know that not all gamma configurations [or mental perceptions or visual acuities, etc., for that matter] are exactly the same - and one popular dictionary definition of orange is "reddish yellow").
C: I didn't say you changed all the users['].
D: I didn't claim otherwise.
Why do…: It's just text.
Furthermore…: Also immaterial; they've not been used on Deletion requests for some time. ¦ Reisio 05:25, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your deletion request for Image:Autumn russian doom metal band 2003.jpg: "User claims to be creator, releasing into PD. I don't read Russian." - what it means? What was wrong with that image?! Yes, i am the creator of that image. That means, I cannot release my image into PD? Why? And then how to release it to ensure that it will not be deleted again? Sorry if my English is bad.

County locator maps[edit]

Hi Bastique. I recently uploaded locator maps for all Florida counties, in Category:Florida county locator maps. I noticed there was one SVG map already, Image:Marion County Florida.svg, which you uploaded. What do you think of Image:Map of Florida highlighting Marion County.svg in comparison? User:dbenbenn 11:04, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Marion County...looks good except for one thing. Lake Okeechobee is missing!!! Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 13:03, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion; I'll add it soon and re-upload. I'll color it blue, as in Image:Map of Michigan highlighting Mecosta County.svg.
I specifically didn't add in all lakes, to keep the maps simple. Are there any other important lakes you think should be on the maps? Perhaps the Great Salt Lake. User:dbenbenn 13:10, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Only because you've got all those inland waterways. However, take a look at Image:Map_of_Florida_highlighting_Tallahassee.svg. You can probably copy the lake from it too... In fact, the lake is labeled as Lake Okeechobee.... Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 13:32, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. It seemed to me then that that article was somewhat unnecessary. I closed the discussion for "keep" on the request pages just in case. -- WB 23:18, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: tags[edit]

Thanks for your note. I will exercise diligence in using the tag more judiciously hereafter (since there are a plethora of duplicates and like images, predicating my tagging of them) and apologise for prior impropriety. E Pluribus Anthony 00:14, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The debate was not originally about using SXC images. I'm aware of the Commons policy (although some want to re-open that debate). The fire rings picture can no longer be found on SXC, so what can we do? It's possible for people to upload copyvios to SXC, is it not? I put them on COM:DEL because I was afraid this was the case, although the Goddess picture is still there, so I think it's OK. Please consider reviewing your comment. I don't want people to be mislead into thinking this is an SXC debate. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:37, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I agree that it was wrong to list those for deletion, but you're still wrong about Image:Asiatic.lioness.bristol.arp.jpg. I took the time to check which wikis it was used in and orphan it before listing it for deletion. This tool is a bit slow at times... —Gabbe 20:43, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Welcome[edit]

Thanks for that, the red link was starting to annoy me a little. About the map of cork, did you make all of those? There is probably one for everywhere in the world! Gmcfoley 01:07, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bastique, it's kinda painful and insulting. You know it shows up on user talk pages right? us regular users are going to be the ones seeing it the most when leaving notes on user's talk pages. Can we see some support for it on COM:VP first please? pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:25, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm sorry I was a bit quick off the mark. You're right, it doesn't hurt to test it. I think reading recentchanges is making me too quick to respond. I should go and look at copyvios from 2004 or something. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 03:35, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the past, it's been fairly easy to become an administrator at Commons. We are all human beings and are subject to anger, and occasional attacks (see underscored text). But can sysops be trolls? I believe when an individual has displayed a continuous habit of ongoing abuse, it begins to necessitate another look:

<Bastique>	paddyez: We are not responsible for image content.
<paddyez> Bastique: you sound like a raving lunatic sticking to nonsence polecies
<Bastique>	paddyez: That's your opinion
<Bastique>	paddyez: We do not have the resources to debate image use
<paddyez> Bastique: OK is there any reason false Images should be not marked as such or better
		be deleted because missleading?
<Bastique>	We are a repository of media
<Bastique>	Inaccurate images do not merit deletion due to inaccuracy
<paddyez> *ROFL*
<Bastique>	Paddyez: STOP IT, You are being a deliberate troll.
<paddyez> what?
<Bastique>	And you are goading me into provication.
<paddyez> I am a commons sysop
<paddyez> *LOL*
<Bastique>	Can sysops act like trolls?
<paddyez> Bastique: what you are telling me is absolut bullocks
<Bastique> paddyez:"Bastique: what you are telling me is absolut bullocks". Well fuck off
[INFO]	You are now ignoring <paddyez>.

I'm taking a much deserved break for an undisclosed number of days. Feel free to leave messages for me. Just don't expect me to answer right away.

Closing a debate[edit]

Is not suitable when the image is a potential copyvio. Whether or not we can keep it is not a matter of opinion, so saying that the community has already expressed itself on the matter is meaningless. If evidence comes to light that they can't be used, then they have to be deleted, regardless of when the last debate was. ed g2stalk 13:37, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear. That's a VERY tricky one, the olympic logo. It would be quite funny if commons didn't have it, but ... Hmm. Choose your battles wisely, over a shoo-in I'd say. If free images get removed, that's grounds for people to get angry at commons. On the other hand, if non-free images get removed, well, at the end of the day, they probably should be :-/ <vascillates> <pulls out my hair> Kim Bruning 15:43, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: Speedy Delete != 7 days[edit]

Hi Bastique, yes I rather agree. But I've written that to give the local projects that were using the image a chance to come and download the image locally as fair use before it is deleted. I'm trying to minimise the negative impact we have on local projects. Short of doing this ourselves (which I am strongly opposed to, even on en:), do you have a suggestion for a better way to do this?

If you want I could remove them from CAT:CSD and list them on a subpage of my own and delete them myself when their 7 days are up, and at least then they wouldn't clutter up the category, but that seems pretty far out of process...

cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 22:47, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your note about CommonsProject:Insignia[edit]

Just found your note at #no.wikipedia about CommonsProject:Insignia.

There are a number of heated on-going debates for the moment so I don't know if I should be involved in yet another one! :D

I don't know very much about the legal issues when it comes to the legal matters for insignia. I just happen to be on the channel when RedDevil666 asked about the norwegian coas, and later the same day tried to figure out how to give him an answare.

If there are anything where I can help, please ask, but I don't know if there are much I can help you on this issue.

That's the phrase I was groping for.

w:Copyright says: Other forms of intellectual property may impose legal protection where copyright does not - such as trademarks and patents. But Commons:Licensing says: Specifically, the following are generally not allowed: [...] Trademarked symbols, logos, etc
