You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Stop injecting {{User}} template to file descriptions. Indeed, {{U}} may be accepted, but better to leave the argument to author= alone.

Original source of apparently scanned images[edit]

It looks like lots of the chemical images you have uploaded, such as File:Photoisomerization of a retinal molecule.jpg, are scans or photographs of printed pages. What is the specific original from which you are working? DMacks (talk) 15:02, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In each case, you listed yourself as the author, and the work as "your own". However, it is only derivative work you made based on someone else's actual work. The original needs to be cited in every case, so that you do not accidentally claim original credit for someone else's work.

More importantly, in these cases, the license for the original is owned by your teacher (or school, or a textbook publisher). Unless they (whoever originally created the images from scratch) declare their work to be free, you are not permitted to declare them free. From what you are describing, these are violations of our Commons:Licensing policy and they need to be deleted. DMacks (talk) 15:56, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I apologise for the inconvenience I brought and it will never happen again. I would like to point out though, there are certain chemical formulas that I cannot find in Commons so they shouldn't be deleted. A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Schéma de la lampe fluorescente compacte.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

@EugeneZelenko: The Permissions Commons team should have received an email on 2018-01-20 titled "Copyright permission for all media by Ayik Umar Said" by Yann Aumars (yaumars@free.fr), the eldest son of Ayik Umar Said and therefore the heir of all his works.
