NHL email?[edit]

Hey, I read that you that the NHL replied to your email. Would you forward it to me, please? I'm just curious because I would like to know the specifics on what we can use and what we can't. Thank you.--THUGCHILDz 02:51, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In a nutshell, they would be okay with us using images on "Wikipedia only", but not agree to GFDL or other such license. There's really nothing more in their message than that.
Our position is that we don't accept such "Wikipedia only" conditions. They must agree for my images to be here under GFDL or other compatible license. I have explained all of this to them.
Thus, we can't use anything, unless for some other reason a particular trophy is clearly not copyrighted. I think the Stanley Cup is okay, because of its age. For the others, I think we should play it safe. Arguments like the trophies are "drinking vessels" and "salad bowls" are dubious, in my opinion. As for freedom of panorama, it's also very questionable. I still think there might be some legitimate, valid reason for keeping the images, but I don't know enough about the legal issues to make a case. So, the articles will simply not have images.
The NHL seems concerned about "commercial use" of the images, and giving up "rights" to the trophies. In reality, GFDL doesn't take away their intellectual property rights to the trophies, and I'm not 100% sure they understand that. GFDL would only apply to these particular images. I also suggested that our images could be made smaller (less suitable for commercial use) and possibly other concessions on our part. E-mailed back and forth a few times, but they were not interested in working out something suitable for both us and them. Oh well, still was worth asking. You might get different results if you asked about the Cricket images or other sports trophies. -Aude (talk | contribs) 05:33, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
 • As I mentioned in my recent post on COM:AN/A, the copyright notice on NHL.com currently reads, "the word mark and image of the Stanley Cup are registered trademarks". Therefore, you might want to email them back and ask for a clarification. Remember that the original bowl is from the 19th century, but the current version with the five large bands attached at the bottom with championship rosters engraved on it was designed in the 1950s. Thanks. Zzyzx11 15:30, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know enough about trademarks to deal with this further, in e-mail exchanges with the NHL. I know we do have Trademark to put on image pages, which may be what's needed. I would like to deal with the other NHL trophies, getting them deleted first. Then figure out what to do with the Stanley Cup images from some admin more knowledgeable about the issues in this case with copyrights and trademarks. -Aude (talk | contribs) 05:19, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Exterior_cimborrio_catedral_vieja_Salamanca.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. I am currently researching possible images to reproduce in a book, entitled 'Energise', which we are are planning on publishing in the near future. I would be interested in using the image of Jared Diamond which you have uploaded onto wikipedia, yet would need information regarding the copyright status of the image and whether it would be possible to obtain a larger version of the image (at least 2MB)

Hello, Aude!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Aude
I saw that you undeleted Plan-métro-Dorval.jpg. I tineyed this image and found out that some very similar images are out there in the web which are (I think) copyrighted. http://www.stcum.qc.ca/metro/mapmetro.htm ios just one of 18 known websides which displays that similar image (Not mentioned the wesides which may use exactly this image, but tineye isn't able to find it). If it's really the uploader's own work it is may just a derivative work of the existing one. However, experiency has shown me that such images usually are self-made screenshots where the uploader claims to have the copyright (which isn't true) or really self-made images, but just derivative works. It would help to have the text of the OTRS permission (maybe the text includes a webside or something like that). Please contact me in any way!
thx --D-Kuru (talk) 23:12, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at this image more, and think we need further confirmation via OTRS. The map appears on the STM website, so pending some more official permission, I have deleted it again. -Aude (talk | contribs) 03:34, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

trying to make the pictures real purty[edit]

Do you know if there's another free program other than Picasa that I can use to clean up images? I do the best I know how with Picasa, but sometimes the sky still looks bad. (ex: File:George J. Mueller Co. fire in 1925.jpg) Gracias. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 02:39, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Try using GIMP, which is similar to Adobe Photoshop, but is free and open source software. The "clone" [1] and "healing brush" [2] tool in GIMP is useful for cleaning up dust speckles. There are other features that can help with adjusting color balance, and other things. [3] -Aude (talk | contribs) 00:31, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

FYI[edit]

You uploaded File:Wailalshehri2.jpg and File:Wailalshehri2.jpg on October 10, 2008. I noticed that the talk pages for these two images were deleted today. I uploaded some of the images from the FBI most wanted list. And I must have come across these images when I did so... probably because I tried to upload the images again, but using a file name I dreamed up, and the upload daemon warned me they were duplicates.

Anyhow, I checked the delet log for the images. They were both deleted by an administrator on September 19, 2009. Identical deletion log entries: "no source, no author, likely copyvio". That is a funny deletion log entry, given the information you put in the upload log: "{{Information |Description=

English: This video includes footage of 9/11 hijacker, Wail al-Shehri, reading his last will and testament. This image is from a screenshot from the video.

|Source=Internet Archive - http://www.archive.org/details/invasion911_p"

This administrator has done some very interesting work. I have admired it, and told him so. But I am afraid it seems to me that he has a couple of blind spots, and exercises his administrator authority in an opaque and unaccountable manner on images on certain topics. One of those blind spots has been images related to the so called war on terror. He deletes images silently, on his sole judgment, and requests for an explanation have felt to me like pulling teeth.

Some other administrators have admonished him when some of those images have come up for deletion review, and they agreed that the images did not represent instances of images that were eligible for speedy deletion.

If you weren't an administrator yourself I would consider requesting a deletion review on these images.

October 2008 was over two years ago. Are you still confident that the most wanted list images qualify for public domain? I know some challengers have suggested that some of the most wanted images may have been taken by individuals who weren't federal employees, and were re-used by American security officials without regard to the intellectual property rights of the original photographers, and thus didn't qualify for PD status.

I'll acknowledge that some of the most wanted images might have complicated status. But I don't think I could agree that most of those would be open and shut cases suitable for speedy deletion.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hello Aude/Archive 2!

First of all, thank you for your contributions!

Is this file your own work? Are you the photographer/author of this file? If yes, please insert Own as source instead of nothing. This shows explicitly that this photograph is your own work.

Thanks in advance for your support. --High Contrast (talk) 14:56, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some admins read like machines - when the source is not in the source field, they cannot parse the information that is there for anybody to read, and tag as "no source". /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 15:00, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Kuiper doesn't obviously know that, according to COM:L#License information, if the uploader is the author, this should be stated explicitly. This was not done - I did that afterwards because I trust you, Aude. --15:07, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
This was stated explicitly, at upload. But even after I had reverted the tag, High Contrast could not see it... /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 15:35, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And who was the only one that was able to fix it finally? Yes, correct, not the kuiper kuy. I do not want Aude's talk page getting inundated by this stuff. Kuiper, please attack me on my talk page. --High Contrast (talk) 15:46, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
