@Jphwra: Thank you for your inquiry. I am not an administrator. Request for blocks should be directed towards COM:AN/B, where an administrator will consider your request. Do not tag images with {{Deleted}} - the deletion nomination which you have performed is sufficient. Author on ISS images

You currently have

|Author=[[NASA|Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, NASA Johnson Space Center]]

but the wikilink to the NASA gallery page doesn't provide anything informative about the Earth Science Unit or JSC. Finding a alternative page for the Unit or JSC probably isn't needed, so my suggestion is to simply remove the wikilink. Thank you for your consideration. Senator2029 20:48, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello Senator2029. Thank you for that suggestion; The wikilink is a leftover from earlier time when I simply credited [[NASA]] as the author. Later on I became aware that the Earth Science Unit preferred explicit mention; and thus I changed it to the current version. I did not really give it all that much thought as to why I wikilinked it at the time, and considering it now I suppose it may not be all that helpful. I will remove the wikilink from future uploads tomorrow. I do not think I will do anything about the existing files immediately though, because while I agree with you that it is not helpful, I do not think that it is having any negative effects either, the wikilink is simply unnecessary, which I believe was the point you were making. Thank you again for contacting me, and do not hesitate to do it again, should you have any other interesting considerations. --Askeuhd (talk) 21:41, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

File:ISS018-E-31303 - View of Earth.jpg has been marked for speedy deletion. (Reason: Please stop spamming these files. 3 files is enough to record the duration of a long time, or you could try recording a video. I is also overflooding all the images or media by other people in "Latest Files")

Why not upload a picture of a plant, animal, or anything else which fits into our scope. You can contribute any media type you want, including but not limited to images, videos, music, and 3D models. And hello to you @SaltzBeach: I am sorry that you feel that way of course. We have discussed that usefulness of these images before [1] and I suggest that you read that. I am always open to discussing the usefulness of the work I do here, but please do discuss it with me, and don't just create speedy requests. --Askeuhd (talk) 07:12, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Ok, sure. Sorry if you feel hurt, but it's just my opinion, since I can't see much other "Latest files". Saltz Beach

Categorization

If you need any help with categorization: I made Category:Photos of Argentina by ISS Expedition 30 Crew Earth Observations and I am going to move pictures by name to these categories named by country. If you have any concerns or even need me to stop, please tell me. Stay safe, A09090091 (talk) 20:53, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello A09090091. I am a grateful for the help in categorization. I have had some ideas to do this for a while now. I have had a busy weekend, but hopefully I can explain my intentions later today. Thanks again. --Askeuhd (talk) 06:27, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
Per bottom discussion I am momentarily going to stop and then see if ~250.000 files in dump category will even stay (hopefully will). I plan to categorize them per country, is there some way to extract descriptions? That would be very helpful. A09090091 (talk) 19:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
I have some happy news. For Category:ISS Expedition 30 Crew Earth Observations I categorized Africa & Asia, Europe wil be on the run tonight. However I found some pictures, that are the only picture of its country (like Oman). Any thoughts about cat-tree? Thanks. A09090091 (talk) 17:13, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
There are still problems with the dump category, though. There are now thousands of files with "view of Earth" in the name. These are just pain to categorize, any advice is appreciated. These would need hand categorizing. A09090091 (talk) 17:15, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Community discussion

Hello Askeuhd! I was curious if there has ever been a community discussion about the mass importing of all ISS images. Has there ever been a bot request, village pump discussion, or similar discussion about the topic? Thanks for your work on this! Nosferattus (talk) 21:00, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello Nosferattus. Thank you for the inquiry. The most expansive discussion concerning this import was this. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask. --Askeuhd (talk) 06:29, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
It seems strange that one of the largest file imports in Commons history, which must be over 1 million files at this point, hasn't benefited from any substantial community discussion. You may not be aware of this, but all bots running on Wikimedia Commons are required to have permission to do so, even if the bot does not require a bot flag (see COM:BOTS). Bots include any automated scripts which upload files, even if they are run under supervision. Bots are also required to be run under separate accounts. I know this sounds like a lot of red tape, but there are good reasons to get community feedback for big projects like this. Could I ask that you open a bot request or village pump discussion? It would be greatly appreciated and you might get some helpful feedback. Nosferattus (talk) 16:37, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Askeuhd,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:ISS047-E-76886 - View of Earth.jpg is out of date. The geographic coordinates given show mountains on Google Maps, and not dunes. Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 15:41, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Geographyinitiative: This is a problem inherent to these ISS Earth Observation photographs. The coordinates show the position of the ISS in orbit, which is normally significantly different from the target location. That said, they provide value by at least giving a *rough* idea of the target's location, and they are specifically noted as being the camera's location, and not the target's location. Huntster (t @ c) 16:22, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
I see now! I didn't check the 'Altitude' parameter! Is there any easy way to figure out what the coordinates of the actually photographed region are? If there's not any easy way, I'm going to try to find the location manually (via looking at other satellite images) so I can put the photo in the appropriate counties/prefectures of Xinjiang. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 16:28, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
@Geographyinitiative: Thank you for your message. Sadly there is not easy way to figure out where the photographed object is located. I have been looking in to programmatically recognizing features in the images using Google Cloud Vision API, but I have been terribly busy lately and have not gotten around to it. I will someday, if someone does not beat me to it. Askeuhd (talk) 09:24, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Question

I am interested in the possibility of obtaining administrator rights here. To prevent harassment from a vandal who has been bothering me for over a year. How to do it? I want to reduce this vandalism and respond more quickly. Please ping me when answering my question. Thank you. --Jphwra (talk) 15:24, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

@Jphwra: Firstly I suggest you read Commons:Administrators - the page describes what an administrator is and does, and how to apply to become one. I think the only general thing that can be said about the process is that it is an advantage to have a lot of experience with a wide variety of Commons tasks. I suggest you carefully read through Commons:Administrators/Archive as each successful and unsuccessful request for adminship gives important clues as to what the community is looking for in admins-to-be. While you do have a substantial amount of contributions on uk-wiki, I do not think that you would be able to attain adminship on Commons before displaying a significantly larger commitment to this project. Some of the core maintenance tasks of Commons is patrolling (especially for copyright violations), file moving, commenting on deletion requests and more. It would probably be advantageous to get significant experience with these tasks before considering applying for adminship. But as stated before, do read Commons:Administrators/Archive, especially for the more recent years, as it really gives a pretty clear indication of what the community is looking for in admins.
Additionally, if you are still suffering from harassment, remember to post on COM:AN/U so that an administrator can assist you. Askeuhd (talk) 06:57, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
