First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Altona!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Éditeurs de cartes postales[edit]

Bonjour Didier,

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 19:30, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Foto InnoTrans14 Emma.jpg[edit]

-- Gerd Fahrenhorst (talk) 20:54, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for info, I added some comment to the file. - I suggest that you add some babel code to your user page, e.g. so visitors can see which language to use. -- Gerd Fahrenhorst (talk) 07:36, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Altona, here you categorized Category:Arnold Jung steam locomotives and Category:0-4-0T locomotives. As I have more images of these locomotives I would like to categorize them correctly. I'm only uncertain what is what. Please enlighten me: is the front or the rear one the Arnold Jung steam locomotive? Greetings, Ies (talk) 18:09, 10 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Category:Rail_transport_in_Indonesian has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Trainpix[edit]

Dear Altona: I just noted that there are a lot of un-categorized photographs in the Category:Photographs from trainpix.org due to a recent mass-upload of Trainpix. Maybe, you are interested in categorizing some of them. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 12:16, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1998 scans[edit]

I cant locate these slides. It must have been during a trip where i also visited Warercress File:Watercress Line 1998 1.jpg. See also File:United Kingdom rail 1998 1.jpg and File:United Kingdom rail 1998 3.jpg. Smiley.toerist (talk) 11:13, 17 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you recently added an image I uploaded to this category, so I had a look at other images in the category, since the one I uploaded is not a "store" by any of the normally understood definitions I am aware of. It looks to me like it is essentially "repurposed boxcars". Is that about right? Should it maybe be changed to some other title that is more easily understood? All Decauville Works Numbers and Year of Construction[edit]

Dear Altona

I am currently collating a list with All Decauville Works Numbers and Year of Construction. Do you know a good list or do you find suitable photos or numbers of Decauville steam locomotives, which are not yet on the list? For instance, do you know the numbers of any of the following locomitives?

My train uploads[edit]

Thanks for categorising my railway station photos—I'm currently racing to sort 100,000+ photos on Flickr and upload the 10% or so that are of potential encyclopedic value, and because of the time pressure am just batch uploading with generic categories like "Leeds station" to get them into at least vaguely the right place.iridescent 18:24, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Do you recognise any of these locomotives?[edit]

Dear Altona: I am trying to find the works numbers of these locomotives for de:Decauville#Decauville-Lokomotiven. Are you able to identify some of them?

Losing files[edit]

Why are you losing files like you did with 'History of Arica' your supposed to have more than 1 file for a cat. but here you have shells of empty cats holding 1 at the root with 1 image. Shame! Broichmore (talk) 18:44, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Broichmore: I know that it is occasionally very frustrating to work on Wikimedia Commons. But this is no reason to use words like "Shame!" without trying to understand, why this categorisation has been done. Please double-check, whether this category contains five subcategories, before making such an unnecessary fuss. I understand that most of these categories are not yet fully utilised, but this will change, as soon as the project progresses. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 19:28, 17 May 2020 (UTC) --NearEMPTiness (talk) 19:28, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Look at History of Arica, in Arica culture there are 16 files in 3 cats, that's bad enough, there's enough justification for 2 cats there but only because of the earthquake. Since when was an earthquake culture? Then there's Arica by century??? 5 cats holding 1 file of a modern lorry that's in service as of 2012. It's not even history yet. I just sweated blood to upload a 152 year old file and, I mean it to be used , and don't want to see it buried away under a pile of useless muck. Unfair to vent on you, I see now, you only created one of these cats. Broichmore (talk) 20:22, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

check categories[edit]

Re: File:King Street Coal Works docks, Seattle, circa 1885 (MOHAI 9021).jpg, please don't remove Check categories when most of the category work remains to be done. It really decreases the chance that someone will get to it. As it happens, I stumbled across this anyway, but I could easily not have. - Jmabel ! talk 20:54, 26 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
