First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Olá Alan, tudo bem? Eu vi o seu problema e vim aqui tentar esclarecer as suas dúvidas. O 'Wikimedia Commons só aceita arquivos livre para uso de obras derivadas e comercial. As fotos do Prison Break possuem copyrights e não podem ser usadas livremente sem autorização dos detentores dos direitos autorais. Nesse caso a Fox. Vc não detêm os direitos das imagens e por isso não pode carregá-las aqui e tampouco escolher uma licença qualquer. Vc deve enviar uma carta ou e-mail para eles pedindo o uso livre das imagens e caso eles permitam, reenvie a carta scaneada ou o e-mail para o OTRS no e-mail permissions-commons-pt@wikimedia.org e colocar a seguinte licença por eles desejadas. Isso vale para qualquer arquivos que possua copyright. Há algumas excessões como logomarcas, mas somente se elas forem tipográficas simples que não se encontram no limiar de originalidade. Recomendo que quando for carregar algum arquivo no Commons procure antes saber qual a licença dele para que possa caerregar o arquivo com a devida licença e evitar dores de cabeça para si mesmo. (em resposta a esta sua dúvida) Olá Alan, se uma imagem está sob copyright restrito, essa situação não muda por você colocar uma licença livre na imagem. Só o detentor dos direitos de autor pode fazer isso. No caso de screenshots de DVDs, seria a empresa cinematográfica/televisiva que possui os direitos de autor da série a única a poder licenciar os screenshots sob uma licença livre, pois estes são considerados um trabalho derivado da série. Esse tipo de imagens não pode ser carregado no Commons. Nalguns casos é possível pedir ao detentor dos direitos de autor que licencie as imagens sob uma licença livre e essa permissão arquiva-se no sistema OTRS, mas no caso de grandes empresas cinematográficas/televisivas/discográficas é muito difícil que isso aconteça, já que eles são muito agarrados aos seus copyrights. Probably noone ever answered your questeion. In reponse to your question why you can not put this images here: "Fair use" material is not allowed on Commons. The page is not in portugese, but you should read: Commons:Licenciamento:

No fair use here, every image on Commons must be free, so that everyone can use it for every purpose including commercial use with the permission from the holder of copyrights. In fact thats realy simple. The english Wikipedia allows fair use, Commons not. That's ok. So could you please tell me what I have to do to upload a screenshot here? I just wanna know that. I can see many screenshots with the "non-free" license, but if I use that, my file is gonna be deleted. But their files arent't. I read many articles here about the licensing, but I haven't found anything about screenshot of DVDs, only screenshots of animes or games. I just want to do a good job here, only that. I created a great page here, that I prepared for a long time. But it doesn't have the photo. Please, help me. I have to know e=what to do. And, yesterday I tried to upload a "promotional photo" of Prison Break, I used the ShareAlike lincense, bu it didn't work. I have already tried all the licenses of Flickr, but it didn't work. And I don't know how to use the licenses "copy-and-paste", you know? I ask you one more time, help me. Thanks.

Hey, here is an example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PB_S4_Intro.png Ok, the person is using the "non-fre" licensing. But I can't use that here. When I copy the "code" to my picture, it show a big warning that you're gonna delete my image. What is happenning? Why does this person use a non-free" license, and I can't use as he/she does? Oh, I forgot one thing.; The only license I found was the "Copyright for free license", I don't know if it's right, but I think so. I used this lincese, because of the copyrighted material. But my image was deleted some moments after. And I think it's the only license for copyrighted material here, isn't it? I'm looking for instruction, only that. Thanks.

Another example: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Scofield_1.jpg It's exactly what I did, EXACTLY. I put my profile at Flickr, the link of the photo, used the ShareAlike, and the both are screenshots. So, why does this picture isn't deleted as mine?

Per the above comments, fair use is simply not allowed on Wikimedia commons. if you find a fair use screen shot posted here, nominate it for deletion.
