Quick question

I'm looking at files presently tagged as lacking evidence of permission, and I came across this one. The source link contains a CC BY 2.0 license, but the (derivative work) crop by the uploader appears to have been plausibly licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. @Red-tailed hawk Hi, I tagged the image as the description credits Grace Villamil, who appears to be a third party photographer (news outlets typically credit both the photographer and itself if it’s a staff photographer).

I see you tagged my photos, and as you can see from the source i've given for my photos, you can see the license is under the "free" catagory. I don't know why you decided to tag my photos without looking at the permission. Also, see this. Summerslam2022 (talk) 16:57, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

@Summerslam2022 The problem with Wallpapers.com is that nothing they host is original work so their claim of free license is pretty meaningless. And a little searching turned up these links. The photos belong to WWE and are not freely licensed.

Thanks for leaving a message here. In a word, yes, you’ve made a mistake with your categories. A good place to start is COM:OVERCAT. What you’re creating is duplication and making the larger categories overcrowded. So for example, since Category:Mohamed Salah is a subcategory of Category:People of Egypt, a photograph of Mo Salah should only be in the first category, not the second. As a general rule, you should not put files in big, general categories like Category:People of Egypt or Category:Businessmen because if you put every image that belonged in there, there would be so many images, it would be impossible to navigate.

@Pharaoh496 How do you know it's free and not owned by anyone? Please take the time to read COM:LICENSING. Keep in mind that "freely available" does not mean the same thing as freely licensed. @Johnefx You can go to Commons:Undeletion requests and request the image to be undeleted. Since your image looks just like https://www.instagram.com/p/C3DyIZRI5YA/?igsh=dms1aG9sbTF3czMx&img_index=1 but tightly cropped and the background cut out very haphazardly, you’d probably want to present the original high res image with the EXIF metadata. I was one of the photographer in afcon and most of Stanley nwabali's picture was taken by me. And also the Instagram handle you showed was Nwabali himself and most of those pictures was sent to his assistant by me, I don't think is right for you to make your decision only base on assumption. You actually keep taking down my works based on your thoughts and not base on any evidence. Anyway the logo File:BiafraRGIE svg seal.svg was given to me by the original owner, I don't know what evidence you need but do we have to sign any official document before he can give me the logo? Speedy deletion of Flickr images on Commons

Hello and well met. I saw you tagged several of the photos which I uploaded from Flickr earlier with speedy deletion. Can you please help me a little bit more in detail with the copyright issue? I received verbal approval for all of the pictures but I still don't exactly understand what I have to do. I used the same steps CeltBrowne did to upload File:Axel Tischer, June 2022 28.jpg for example. There must be something I missed apparently. Can you give me a hand in here? Thank you. Regards! @JeyReydar97 First off, I was wrong about File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024.png - that one is not a copyright violation so I removed the tag.
Anyway, if you look at the Flickr source for that image ([5]) and for File:Axel Tischer, June 2022 28.jpg ([6]), you'll see that it has a Creative Commons license that allows commercial use and modification. On the other hand, [7], [8], and [9] are marked All Rights Reserved. Copyrighted images like these are not accepted on Commons.
If you have received verbal permission from the copyright owner, they would have to do one of two things:
  1. Change the licensing on the Flickr image to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA (they must allow commercial use and modification, so any license that has ND or NC would not work).
  2. Email the volunteer response team and confirm that they are releasing their work in to the public domain.

As for the File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024.png, it was deleted in the meantime. Do I have to re-upload it or do I have to contact the user who deleted it in order to restore it? @JeyReydar97 Sorry, that shouldn't have happened-I thought I removed the copyvio tag so not sure how it was deleted. Normally, I'd tell you to go through the COM:UNDELETE process, but in this case, I took the liberty of uploading JPEG versions, File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024.jpg and File:Mao (wrestler), February 3, 2024 (cropped).jpg, since you uploaded the image as a PNG file, which "flattens" the image a bit and takes longer to load on Wikipedia.
For future uploads from Flickr, I recommend using the Upload Wizard and using the "Share Flickr Image" function. It's a lot easier since you don't have to download the image to your computer, and it won't upload a file if it has an incompatible license.

@Mr Mines Engine That's actually fine. If you go to the Flickr source page and scroll down to select "License history", you'll see that the photo originally had a Creative Commons license. @Rejoy2003 Sure. The issue is that this image is a photograph within the photograph, so the Flickr user doesn’t necessarily own the rights to the photograph inside the frame. The subject was born in 1904, he looks quite young here, definitely around 30s. Read {PD-India}, works before 1964 are in public domain. @Ooligan It's from https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/6059692/r-kelly-girl-texas-std-sex-cult/. I figured it was the same image with a much higher resolution but didn't catch the number 1 (I'm guessing it's part of the Getty Images watermark). What's the best way to proceed?   1. Upload your original JPEGs instead of web downloads and screenshots.
  2. Follow the instructions at COM:VRT and email your proof of ownership and copyright release.

@ReallyAmazingDude13 For this particular image, you don’t have to do anything because it’ll be deleted soon because of copyright issues. How do I dispute a copyright issue? The image is open for public use

You'll have to give me more information. Which specific image are you talking about? Anyway, most of what you find online is copyrighted. "Public use", i.e. anyone can view, isn't the same thing as copyright free, meaning anyone is free to distribute, modify and publish, use it as part of a commercial product, etc. But the best thing you can do is contact the person who tagged the image for deletion (that might be me!).   1. Email COM:VRT from your work email so the volunteer response team can see that you work for the club.
  2. Submit a copyright release statement from the club
  3. Upload the original high res photos—you have been uploading web quality low res and screenshots.

@El pibe de las mil letras Are you sure? Because File:Adrianarkero.png and File:Tororojas.jpg look pretty terrible not to be a screenshot and there's some weird cropping with File:Josenicogonalez.jpg and File:Lucianopascual2023.jpg.
Anyway, whether they're screenshots or not, you should upload the high-res photos from your camera instead of uploading compressed low-res photos from the web or social media. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 13:22, 22 March 2024 (UTC)

  • To prevent your images from being deleted, follow the steps at COM:VRT and submit a copyright statement showing that you took these photographs, you work for the club, and you're forfeiting your rights as the photographer.
  • To have images undeleted, start a request at COM:UNDEL.
