First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Je ne crois pas que le fait qu'il y ait ou non une mention de copyright change quelque chose. Maintenant, illustrer l'usage de l'escalade dans les medias est plus que complexe. Cateogories[edit]

Hi Absinthologue, I think that Category:Indoor lead Climbing, Category:Indoor Bouldering‎ and Category:Indoor speed Climbing‎ aren't ok at all (btw Climbing have to be lowercase). This is a subdivision regarding competitions so the right place is under Category:Climbing competitions. Under Category:Climbing competitions we can group the competitions as:

but without putting every single image under the category but just put Category:Climbing World Championships 2012 inside them. Hi
I agree with you that the organisation of categories is not completly clear. I'm not sure the 3 categories (lead, speed and boulder) are not necessary a subdivision of a competitions. While editing the french article about climbing i was looking for pictures about this 3 categories regardless of relation with competitions. I even think that corresponding categories for outdoor climbing could be interesting.
btw, beside this question, why the categorie concerning world championships 2012 should be a subdivision of the 3 type of indoor climbing?
i'm ready to ask to change the name of the 3 categories for the lowercase. but what else should we do to improve the organisation?
(please note that my english could be not totally correct and i'm not generally interested in the categories work - but i agree that there is work to do about this here).

I just said that "the names" aren't correct, the existence of the categories is ok. The right names are:

Because there is just 1 category Category:Climbing World Championships 2012 with all disciplines (not the boulder) put it in both "Lead climbing competitions" and "Speed climbing competitions" (another way is to create subcategories "Climbing World Championships 2012 (lead)" and "Climbing World Championships 2012 (speed)" but we don't care by now). Ok I proceed to create categories Category:Lead climbing competitions, Category:Speed climbing competitions and Category:Bouldering competitions and transfer from your old categories. Regarding category "lead climbing" please don't do it. It's a couple of years that I check and rearrange daily climbing & mountaineering files (check my contributions) and it would be a mess. There is already Category:Sport climbing and Category:Climbing in Iran. When you create too generic categories it's really a mess because people put every kind of images in them and these categories become totally useless. Re: Climbing holds[edit]

Leave me some time for checking. AFAIK in italian we use "presa" or "presa artificiale" only for artificial hold, otherwise we use "appiglio" it:Appiglio (arrampicata). Also french "prise d'escalade" AFAIK is only artificial (just try this: http://www.google.it/search?hl=it&q=prise+d'escalade&tbm=isch). I will double check, however it seems that "presa d'arrampicata", "prise d'escalade", "climbing hold" refers to artificial hold, instead just "presa", "prise" and "hold" refers to both natural and artificial.   • create a new "Holds (climbing)" category (child of climbing) with inside two categories:

I will think about categorization, I have just still a problem about "Natural" and "Artificial". "Artificial climbing hold" has a lot of results for example on Google, instead "Natural climbing hold" only 1. "Natural" should be wrong. Ok, "natural climbing holds", "natural holds", "natural rock climbing holds" are used, so I think we can proceed. Regarding categorization an artificial hold is not really an equipment, so we can categorize it only under the new "Holds (climbing)". Hi Absinthologue, good for the categories but I think you have wrong typed Category:Articial climbing holds, "articial" instead of artificial. You can correct it by creating the new one, moving the files inside and requesting the deletion of the wrong one when empty. I have done it for you just now. Cya. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Absinthologue,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.
