Hello, Absinthologue!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Copyvio[edit]

- Zil (d) 13:28, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cateogories[edit]

Hi Absinthologue, I think that Category:Indoor lead Climbing, Category:Indoor Bouldering‎ and Category:Indoor speed Climbing‎ aren't ok at all (btw Climbing have to be lowercase). This is a subdivision regarding competitions so the right place is under Category:Climbing competitions. Under Category:Climbing competitions we can group the competitions as:

but without putting every single image under the category but just put Category:Climbing World Championships 2012 inside them. I can do the work. --Rotpunkt (talk) 15:30, 19 November 2012 (UTC) Btw, if you are interested in, some time ago I proposed a different categorization for climbing, using the same method that is used for skiing, see Category_talk:Climbing#Thoughts about climbing categories. Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 15:34, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi
I agree with you that the organisation of categories is not completly clear. I'm not sure the 3 categories (lead, speed and boulder) are not necessary a subdivision of a competitions. While editing the french article about climbing i was looking for pictures about this 3 categories regardless of relation with competitions. I even think that corresponding categories for outdoor climbing could be interesting.
btw, beside this question, why the categorie concerning world championships 2012 should be a subdivision of the 3 type of indoor climbing?
i'm ready to ask to change the name of the 3 categories for the lowercase. but what else should we do to improve the organisation?
(please note that my english could be not totally correct and i'm not generally interested in the categories work - but i agree that there is work to do about this here).
--Absinthologue (talk) 17:09, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I just said that "the names" aren't correct, the existence of the categories is ok. The right names are:
and these three categories should be child of Category:Climbing competitions not of Category:Indoor climbing. We can do faster creating the new categories and requesting the deletion of the old ones. I can do it if you want. Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 19:56, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I mean:

Climbing competitions
Lead climbing competitions
Climbing World Championships 2012
World cup Kranj
Bouldering competitions
Boulder Worldcup Munich 2012‎
Boulder Worldcup Vienna 2010‎
Speed climbing competitions
Climbing World Championships 2012

Because there is just 1 category Category:Climbing World Championships 2012 with all disciplines (not the boulder) put it in both "Lead climbing competitions" and "Speed climbing competitions" (another way is to create subcategories "Climbing World Championships 2012 (lead)" and "Climbing World Championships 2012 (speed)" but we don't care by now). It's always better to have categories inside categories instead of images in a lot of different categories. --Rotpunkt (talk) 20:21, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I proceed to create categories Category:Lead climbing competitions, Category:Speed climbing competitions and Category:Bouldering competitions and transfer from your old categories. Regarding category "lead climbing" please don't do it. It's a couple of years that I check and rearrange daily climbing & mountaineering files (check my contributions) and it would be a mess. There is already Category:Sport climbing and Category:Climbing in Iran. When you create too generic categories it's really a mess because people put every kind of images in them and these categories become totally useless. Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 13:19, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding "If i try to find pictures of indoor climbing, i'm not obliged to look in all competitions for it..." it's wrong, read here: Commons:Categories#For more appropriate categorization, where it says "Generally files should only be in the most specific category that exists for certain topic...", and also Commons:Categories#Over-categorization Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 13:31, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy you agree. Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 11:18, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Climbing holds[edit]

Leave me some time for checking. AFAIK in italian we use "presa" or "presa artificiale" only for artificial hold, otherwise we use "appiglio" it:Appiglio (arrampicata). Also french "prise d'escalade" AFAIK is only artificial (just try this: http://www.google.it/search?hl=it&q=prise+d'escalade&tbm=isch). Before doing anything I would check on climbing manuals which is the correct terminology. Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 11:32, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will double check, however it seems that "presa d'arrampicata", "prise d'escalade", "climbing hold" refers to artificial hold, instead just "presa", "prise" and "hold" refers to both natural and artificial. Surely I will double check this with references that I will write here. --Rotpunkt (talk) 11:47, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Examples of "prise d'escalade":
Examples of just "prise": http://www.grimpavranches.com/les-plus/lexique/
IMHO a solid solution woud be (say if you agree):
  • create a new "Holds (climbing)" category (child of climbing) with inside two categories:
  • "Natural climbing holds"
  • "Artificial climbing holds" (child also of "Climbing equipment)
--Rotpunkt (talk) 12:39, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For french page is more correct "Prise (escalade)" and for Commons the "best" solution for me is creating two categories with adjective "Natural" and "Artificial" --Rotpunkt (talk) 12:42, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I will think about categorization, I have just still a problem about "Natural" and "Artificial". "Artificial climbing hold" has a lot of results for example on Google, instead "Natural climbing hold" only 1. "Natural" should be wrong. Just a sec. --Rotpunkt (talk) 12:48, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, "natural climbing holds", "natural holds", "natural rock climbing holds" are used, so I think we can proceed. Regarding categorization an artificial hold is not really an equipment, so we can categorize it only under the new "Holds (climbing)". Can I do the work? --Rotpunkt (talk) 13:00, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, i let you do the work. Thank you for this work--Absinthologue (talk) 13:38, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Absinthologue, good for the categories but I think you have wrong typed Category:Articial climbing holds, "articial" instead of artificial. You can correct it by creating the new one, moving the files inside and requesting the deletion of the wrong one when empty. I have done it for you just now. Cya. (p.s.: sorry if I didn't read your previous msg but I haven't notifications if you answer here, usually ppl answer on the recipient discussion page). --Rotpunkt (talk) 00:44, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
File:Anapurna by Maurice Herzog.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
