Note on Wikipedia screenshots[edit]

When you are uploading screenshots from Wikipedia, please be mindful to check that media contained in these is free, and add attribution on the derivative screen shot (e.g., [1]). If the images are licensed under CCBYSA, then this attribution is required, but in all cases this helps to verify that the media reused in the screen shot was not used on the local project under a claim of fair use, meaning we could not retain derivatives here on Commons. Also in this image, two of the original works are licensed under CCBYSA 4.0 (here, and here). CCBYSA licenses are compatible with all later licenses, but are not compatible with earlier ones, meaning your derivative work should be licsened CCBYSA 4.0, rather than 3.0. @GreenMeansGo: Thanks for pointing this out. For screenshots containing CCBYSA 4.0 images, what is the best way to go about updating the license of the Commons file to CCBYSA 4.0? In this case I'm using the MediaWiki screenshot template, which I now realize is not appropriate for some of these. Also, is it common practice to remove the images by putting gray boxes over them or something? Wondering what will be a good balance of effort and quality here.
@GreenMeansGo: oh wow, thanks for diving in and doing the work yourself. No expectation that you're going to keep doing more, but if you do you can see a list of the screenshots with their respective page titles here.
Well, if the article contained non-free media under a claim of fair use, then you would need to remove the media from your screenshot in order to upload it here. Better option is probably just to pick a new article that only uses free media (assuming you're showing off a feature that is article-neutral). The way to tell is when you click on the image itself, it will have a fair use rationale, like en:File:Heart Berries cover art.webp does, and it will be uploaded locally rather than on Commons.
As to Template:Wikimedia-screenshot, that's actually a really interesting question now that I'm looking into it. I presumed there would be some method of transcluding a 4.0 license rather than the default 3.0, but it doesn't look like there is. I've opened a thread at the village pump here. Autopatrolled rights given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. - FitIndia Talk Mail 20:57, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
