Photograph dates

Thank you for contributing pictures to Wikimedia. It is important to date the pictures according to the date the pictures were taken, not the date you upload them. I have corrected many of your picture dates today, but not all of them: there are too many.

When you upload the picture, Wikimedia automatically records the upload date for you, which you can see at the bottom of the page for each picture, so you do not need to add that information.

So, if you upload a picture on 6 June 2012, but the picture was photographed on 14 August 2007, then you date the picture as 14 August 2007 (or 2007-08-14, whichever you prefer). You should never use the date you upload, unless the picture was taken on that same day. O'Dea (talk) 13:44, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome. I wonder if you've seen Category:Media needing categories? There's several thousand old out of scope and copyvio images amongst these uncatted files. INeverCry 00:30, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

I haven't done much in the August/September and November/December ones. I also haven't done any from the next page. I usually get atleast 30 or 40 images from each day that I dr or csd. There's almost 200000 images, so you can imagine how many could be dr or csd worthy. INeverCry 00:43, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

The out of scope ones are an obvious delete for myself and other admins, as they've been unused for such a long time. Category:Unidentified people is another place I've found plenty of dr and csd noms. Category:User page images has quite a few unused files in amongst the used ones as well. Yeah, most of these are single files that have to be nominated for deletion one by one. I always check the contribs though, and I turn up quite a few people who have uploaded groups of personal or copyvio images that can be nominated in batches with VisualFileChange. I personally enjoy repetitive tasks, but I can see how this could be tedious for someone who doesn't. One really good thing about these older files is that you won't have many people arguing with you over the nominations. INeverCry 01:23, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

I notice you've done a csd on a few out of scope images. Csd is only for copyrighted stuff. Anything out of scope should just be nominated for deletion. I'll fix those. INeverCry 01:28, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

The out of scope stuff should all be simply nominated for deletion (DR) along with copyvio stuff that isn't obvious (no EXIF, small sizes, etc). CSD should be used only for album covers, movie posters, water-marked images, and images where you have a copyrighted source that you can show or where you feel copyvio is obvious. Oi Érico. Reparei que se propôs para administrador daqui, e espero que seja eleito, para mais facilmente poder ajudar aqui. Eu por enquanto não voto, pois não o conheço, mas gostava de comentar algo sobre isso. Não é nada importante, por isso posso mesmo fazer aqui na sua talk. As imagens fora do escopo são talvez um dos nossos menores problemas, mas se você gosta de andar nisso, tanto melhor. Apenas deve ter em consideração o seguinte, na minha opinião

• 1) O escopo aqui tem pouco que ver com os critérios da Wikipédia. Aqui não se liga a notabilidade, mas a usabilidade. Tampas de bueiro não são exactamente a coisa mais notável do mundo, no entanto aqui são inventariadas e catalogadas até por fabricante e data de fabricação. :)
• 2) Uma foto correctamente licenciada mas aparentemente fora do escopo, pode mesmo assim ser importante para o Commons. Um babaca qualquer plantado no meio da rua em Jacarutibá do Nordeste pode ser a única foto que você tem dessa cidade. Nesse caso deve manter a foto pelo menos até aparecer algo melhor, na minha opinião. Mesmo aparecendo, por detrás do babaca pode aparecer a igreja do lugar, aí se der corta esse bocado, ou outros que dê para aproveitar, e coloca aqui.
• 3) Este caso, que tem tudo a ver com out of scope, é algo que me deixa triste. Quando você for eleito, se tiver curiosidade, veja as fotos que foram apagadas. Não sei se essa gente é notável ou não, mas pelo menos em alguns casos o vestuário que eles usam é bastante interessante, e na minha opinião deviam ter sido mantidas. Além disso, pelo tipo de vestuário e época é evidente que era gente de relevo social no meio onde viviam. Se eu tivesse sabido desse caso enquanto ele estava a correr, teria votado para manter. Esse é um caso em que se perdeu imenso tempo e esforço, e se atazanou um usuário de qualidade até à exaustão (esse Norton), por um excesso de zelo com o out of scope. Tanto tempo e tanta discussão, e objectivamente o projecto saiu prejudicado, pois já tenho restaurado ficheiros que foram apagados aí que têm utilidade mais que óbvia, como é o caso deste.

Eu não coloquei lá o meu voto porque como já disse, não o conheço, porque você só se juntou ao projecto em Março, porque desconfio de gente inclinada para se ver livre de ficheiros fora do escopo, e porque o seu pedido de global rollback, junto com um aumento impressionante de actividade aqui no Commons desde o mês passado seguido da candidatura, pode ser indício de "flag collecting", coisa que eu detesto. De todo o modo, espero estar enganado, e desejo-lhe a melhor sorte na candidatura, pois bem precisamos aqui de mais administradores falantes de português. Ah, eu esqueci-me dizer que todos os ficheiros que conferi que você apagou eram realmente fora do escopo. :)

Desconfio desse tipo de atitude porque é muito comum em gente que chega das Wikipédias tentando aplicar aqui os conceitos de lá. Havia uma mania na Wiki-pt de apagar as bandas de garagem de lá, e depois vir aqui colocar os ficheiros de imagem para eliminação, quando esses ficheiros estavam muitas vezes no escopo daqui, por exemplo. Uma banda de garagem pode não ser relevante por si só, mas pode servir para ilustrar "bandas de garagem", o evento em que eles participaram, os instrumentos, a música no país num certo período, etc.

É a fonte de muitas discussões pouco produtivas e chatas, e por vezes causa da eliminação de ficheiros importantes, como o que eu mostrei. Até uma das fotos que eu carreguei, que mostra uma loja que vende "bloom" aqui no Funchal, que é coisa que ultimamente sai no jornal todos os dias por cá, teve um desgraçado qualquer que colocou para eliminação como "random tourist shot" ou algo parecido, porque não tinha a noção do que significava. Com tanto caso de violação de copyright óbvia, e essa gente preocupada com isso...

De qualquer modo suponho que esse não seja o seu caso, e espero realmente que tenha vindo para ficar aqui, pois bem que são necessários mais admins lusófonos, especialmente brasileiros. Você talvez não calcula a quantidade de copyvios que são carregados diariamente por brasileiros e outros sul-americanos aqui. Além disso, as leis brasileiras de copyright são algo complexas, e é bom mesmo ter zucas activos aqui para ajudar a deslindar essas situações.

O meu maior receio, como não o conheço, é realmente que você seja um turista de ocasião, pois tem gente que só usa o Commons para subir um degrau na escala de poder da Wikimedia, e se bem que não atrapalham aqui, também não servem de muito, né?

Não, não é por isso que eu não ando por lá. Aliás, os meus interesses em música são relevantíssimos, segundo os conceitos wikipedianos. :)

Não ando por lá porque ando meio enjoado de Wikipédia. Lá você leva uma eternidade para parir um esboço mal amanhado, e depois muitas vezes tem de discutir aquela porcaria até à exaustão por causa duma ninharia qualquer. Aqui em 3 segundos você partilha um Caravaggio com a Humanidade. Ou a foto que tirou daquela casa de sobrado antiga, bonita, no fim da rua. E um tempo depois chega alguém e mete na descrição que é a casa que foi do Coronel Antunes, e você já aprendeu qualquer coisa, sem aquele saco da pesquisa inédita e da fonte obrigatória (que é importante, mas muitas vezes não existe mesmo). E se estiver errado, não tem problema, ao menos é um ponto de partida.

Outra coisa boa daqui é que quase não tem vandalismo, é um sítio onde você pode estar sossegado contribuindo como quiser sem pressão. E se quiser pressão, basta ir aos ninhos de copyvios e escolher uma vítima qualquer. Faz uns 3 dias quase apanhei um esgotamento ao apagar umas trocentas imagens de machos de sunga e axilas peludas que um tal de Eduzão88 andou pescando em blogs de sacanagem e metendo aqui desde 2009, passando despercebido esse tempo todo. Mas isso é algo que você não tem mesmo de fazer, mesmo sendo um administrador activo, faz se quiser e se estiver para aí virado, não tem aquele saco todo da wiki-pt.

Eu não vou andar vigiando as suas DRs nem nada do que faça aí, longe disso. Na verdade vou dar mesmo um voto de confiança, se realmente está motivado para trabalhar aqui. Se tiver alguma dúvida com qualquer assunto aqui do Commons, a minha talk está sempre aberta.

I'm not sure about your closure of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Boss Lorainne Kho6.jpg yesterday. Since I nominated it, I certainly agree that it should be deleted, but out of scope personal images are not on the speedy deletion list -- generally DRs for scope should be left open for the full week. Occasionally -- perhaps one in ten -- during the week one of our colleagues will note that the subject is, in fact, notable, and that the image is not at all out of scope. Hi Jim. I think most DRs of out of scope personal images are safe to speedy delete. I'm referring to user images where you have people partying, drinking beers, hanging out with their friends, making goofy faces, low quality webcam shots and phone pics, and images where the descriptions says "profile pic" or "my photo" or something along those lines. I do this primarily with older uncatted etc images, as does Erico. I leave new images for the full 7 days, in order to give the uploaders time to put them in userspace if they want. I think that is a serious mistake. I have seen hundreds of times that one of us will nominate such an image for deletion and it turns out during the seven days that the person is notable. The only time for speedy deletes is when there is a clear copyvio, attack image, personal rights violation, or other image that must be taken down right now for legal or moral reasons. An image that is probably just out of scope does not have that urgency, which is why our rules require that it wait seven days for comments before deletion. .     Jim . . . . Although you had no way of knowing it, this was the subject of an UnDR which concluded that it should not be restored. I understand that it is a very steep learning curve, so I cut all new Admins a lot of slack. (Without slang -- "I understand that there many things to learn in a short time, so I try to be very forgiving of minor problems with new Admins.")

Also, almost all regular users of Commons expect to carry on conversations on the page where they started -- it keeps conversations in one place. Kanalaska

Hi,

My name is Andras Malatinszky, I am a sysop and checkuser on the Hungarian Wikipedia.

Last month you deleted File:Kanalaska.jpg. I'm wondering if you'd do me the courtesy of recovering this image and emailing it to me to malatinszky (at) gmail (dot) com. Note that I'm not asking for the file to be undeleted, I'd just like to be able to see it.

The reason for my request is this: It has been suggested by some Hungarian wikipedians that a huwiki user named Kanalaska might be a sock puppet for another huwiki user named Dencey, who has been blocked from editing the Hungarian Wikipedia for over a year now, owing to repeated offensive behavior towards other editors. I am hoping that the image Kanalaska.jpg may provide a clue as to whether or not the two are in fact identical.
