This is a user subpage with some detailed examples of uploading images from Flickr to Commons. The procedure is generally not difficult, but it's easy to forget the details if I haven't done it in a while, because it requires some slightly awkward pointing, clicking, copying, and pasting. It would be nice to have a tool that would let me just click on a Flickr photo and say "Upload this to Commons". FlickrLickr is probably not that tool, because it seems to work backwards from what I want: I want to look at photos on Flickr and upload the ones I want, whereas FlickrLickr blindly mass-uploads photos from Commons, and then relies on humans to categorize the uploads on Commons after the fact. That does not take advantage of the specialized knowledge a particular human is likely to have (I am pretty good at categorizing photos of things I know something about).

Record the photos I will like to upload. I prefer photos of wind turbines in locations where Commons does not have much coverage already. I especially like geotagged photos because this makes it straightforward to identify the wind farm, even if the photographer did not know the name. Knowing the name enables me to look up the specifications of the wind turbines.

18:28, 6 July 2009 (UTC): Flickr has a lot of wind turbine photos. I'm up to page 46 as I look through them:

For some reason, the Flickr search does not go past page 61 of results, even though that's only about 732 results. The search page says 1,452 results, but I can only see about half of them. Here is the search with the option to sort by date:

That finds some photos I may have missed. This would be a good way to avoid looking at photos I have already uploaded.

Wind turbines on buildings[edit]

This is an interesting niche class of wind turbine. It probably won't amount to much because of the problems with building turbulence and the limits on turbine size in a city, but putting the wind turbines close to the consumers reduces the need for long transmission wires.

Uploads to test the new Flinfo features[edit]

09:24, 28 September 2009 (UTC): I just updated {{Flinfo}} to use the new Flinfo features. See User:Teratornis/Notes#Modify Template:Flinfo. Test this with some manual uploads. The only manual steps remaining now are to:

  1. Download the original photo size from Flickr.
  2. Copy and paste the local filename into the upload form (actually into the file selector when I click the Browse button on the upload form).

Flinfo fills out most of the upload form with description, categories, and destination filename that I specify in the call to {{Flinfo}} now.
