Commons has, of course, more nudes than you could poke a stick at. Spread across a baffling array of categories. This page is for ones that I find interesting, and possibly for progress notes.
-
Reading Girl (1886), Theodor Roussel. Unusually informal for the time?
-
Etty, Andromeda (1830s). Interesting angle and framing.
- Reading Girl
- The Tate has a good write-up, accessible via the file info page. "During the 1880s British art was moving away from an elevated, Neo-Classical interpretation of the nude towards a new naturalism, regarded as a threat to moral standards. Roussel's picture was exhibited at the New English Art Club in April 1887 and caused a mild scandal." "In the opinion of Roussel's contemporary, the painter Sir William Orpen, this was the finest nude painting of his time."
- Compare Manet's Olympia, also naturalistic, but formally posed and staring confidently at the viewer. The reading girl is relaxed and unconcerned.
- Roussel was a friend of whistler, and Hetty Pettigrew modeled for both artists among others.
- Done: added model (model (P2634))) and additional depicts to The Reading Girl (Q22342983) [1]
- Etty's Andromeda
- Etty is well-known for his nudes, but this angle for Andromeda (1830s) is a departure from his usual classical composition. It could almost be a study for a larger work.

- "if you ignore the fact that she's chained up and wrapped in cellophane the model is much more natural-looking than most of Etty's women" – Iri. (see file usage to locate quote)
Angelique and Andromeda
[edit]Some depictions of Roger's (Ruggiero's) rescue, showing Angelique (Angelica) chained to a rock by the sea, remind me of depictions of Andromeda chained. (See w:en:Orlando Furioso)

[edit]My favourite is Doré's dynamic pose, where Andromeda recoils from the sea monster and the lapping waves.

Clothed and not chained, the light-skinned "princess of Æthiopia" strikes a powerful pose with elbows extended. Corinthian amphora.
-
Pompeiian fresco, 1st cent. Relaxing together post-rescue, Perseus is naked and Andromeda is clothed.
-
Another Pompeiian fresco. Andromeda is pale-skinned and mostly clothed with one breast exposed. Perseus is swarthy and naked but for a cape.
-
Hellenic mosaic, 2–3 cent., Zeugma, Anatolia. Andromeda, freed from her chains, is dressed whilst Perseus is naked.
-
9th century MS. Chained between two pillars.
Félix Vallotton
[edit]I wasn't familiar with Vallotton, discovered him via Commons:Picture of the Year/2022/R2/Gallery. In addition to the nudes, his landscapes and other genres are good. Love how the gallery is organised by theme and genre, not just genre alone. Category:Paintings of nude women by Félix Vallotton

Human figure positions Iconclass
[edit]Iconclass 31A(+5) uses: standing, leaning, sitting, kneeling, sitting on the ground, hanging.
Some Commons cats that I've seen distinguish reclining (as in lying-reclining not standing-leaning, but the Wikidata item is unclear), lying supine, maybe others.
