Proposal for a process to eliminate multiple Featured Pictures that are very similar[edit]

The question how to deal with multiple highly similar Featured Pictures (something many users dislike) has come up repeatedly. This proposal contains an idea designed to solve the problem in the democratic manner customary at Commons. Suggestions for improvements and all other comments are welcome. -- JovanCormac 08:31, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Idea: Featured Pictures Heads Up[edit]

  • The Featured Pictures nomination and promotion process remains untouched. Whatever image is deemed to have FP quality may be nominated and promoted. This is essential in order to not discourage newcomers from nominating. Every nomination is treated the same, no matter how many Featured Pictures there are already that might be similar.

  • If a user finds that there are multiple Featured Pictures identical or highly similar in both subject and composition, he may nominate all of them in a FP Heads Up (see examples below). A heads up is not a traditional delisting nomination. The question whether or not the nominated pictures fulfill the FP guidelines is irrelevant. But it is a requirement that all candidates must already be featured.

  • Users may vote on the heads up in three different manners:
  1. Disagree. The user disagrees on the idea that the candidates are similar in subject and composition. Votes not elaborating will be discounted.
  2. Agree. The user agrees on the similarity of the candidates but doesn't want to state a preference.
  3. Agree and prefer X. The user agrees on the similarity of the candidates and considers X to be the best of them.
Only logged-in users may vote. The nominator may vote.

  • At the end of the voting period (9 days), if
    • at least 5 users voted,
    • at least 2/3 of all voters agreed on the similarity and
    • at least one candidate has received a vote of preference,
all candidates having fewer votes of preference than the most preferred one(s) are delisted from Featured Pictures. A template is put on their description page explaining what happened and providing a link to the superior image(s).
