I'm John C. Baez. I'm a mathematical physicist. I'm making a big career shift: I used to work on pure mathematics and fundamental physics, but starting in July 2010 I've been working at the Centre for Quantum Technologies in Singapore. I'm also thinking hard about the global ecological crisis. As part of this, I've been working on the Azimuth Project, which aims to become a focal point for scientists and engineers interested in saving the planet. More and more people are getting involved. If you want to join us, please drop me a line or join the Azimuth Forum.

I like quantum field theory, general relativity, n-categories, and other things that seem scary at first but turn out to be simple and beautiful when you understand them. Since I enjoy these things so much, I can't help but feel that everyone else will too. So, I like to explain stuff on my website. In 2003, I added a diary, where I can be a bit more random and diverse. In August 2006, I joined David Corfield and Urs Schreiber on a group blog: the n-Category Café.

More recently I've started a blog called Azimuth, a wiki called the Azimuth Project, and a discussion forum called the Azimuth Forum, all related to environmental and energy issues.

I also spend a little time trying to battle the forces of evil - but not too much, because that tends to make me grumpy, and grumpy people can wind up doing more harm than good. The world is tricky that way.

Along those lines, check out the wiki called EUREKA - Science Journal Watch, which I started with Blake Stacey, Bruce Bartlett, Tom Leinster and others.

If you want to know what I'm doing now, try my itinerary, my diary, my blog and the Azimuth Forum.
