Introduction[edit]

  • Some time ago I noticed that a Wikipedia article was lacking an image of the described artefact, an image that I could supply in superior quality compared with images I found in Wikimedia Commons.
  • Last week I prepared my standard camera setup with an automatic focus rail, an appropriate LED illumination, and a translucent surface with illumination from below on which to place a small object such as a lens (up to 2,5 kilogrammes).
  • I then took a series of images with varying focus depths, which I then combined to one image on my computer with focus stacking software.

Caveat[edit]

  • The following description is explicitly not for those contributors who simply want to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons, either to add to the ever-expanding array of images that is the mainstay of Wikimedia Commons or to participate in one of the recurring Wikimedia Commons contests.
  • This description is thus specifically laid out as a guideline for those who intend to extend, enhance or even create new content for the Wikimedia realm and simultaneously desire to create and understand the sometimes perplexing interplay of links between Wikipedia entities.
  • To my knowledge most existing Help pages and guidelines concentrate on a single Wikimedia project. With this endeavour I intend to provide an overarching understanding of which edits and Wikimedia tools are necessary, how to set appropriate links between various Wikimedia projects, and thus attain a coherent set of interlinked information.
  • As I have only ventured so far in the Wikimedia realm the following descriptions are constrained to only the interactions between the following Wikimedia projects: English-language Wikipedia, foreign-language Wikipedias, Wikimedia Commons, Wikimedia Commons categories, Wikidata, and, last but not least, references to the World-Wide-Web.
  • At this initial stage all information is text-based. SVG-based graphics will be provided in a later stage, as I as of now have only a rudimentary knowledge of the powerful tool Inkscape required to create such graphics.
  • These guidelines may be extended in the future, maybe even as an extension to the exisiting Help pages.

First step: Check for existing information[edit]

  • As you intend to add more content than just an simple image, although not obvious, this is the most important step: always check all relevant Wiki projects for preexisting information.
  • Depending on which content you intend to add, you should choose one of the following modes of operation.

(A) What to check when adding media for a Wikipedia article[edit]

  • Check whether an appropriate Wikipedia article exists. -> type text into Wikipedia search input area
If found check whether it really covers the topic you intend to add your media to. Otherwise take note to create a new article.
If such an article does not exist take note to create a new article with an appropriate title.
  • Search within Wikimedia Commons whether comparable media relevant to the topic exist (media = images, audio, video, ...).
If one or more items are found check a few of these images as to whether they link to other Wikipedia projects in any way:
    1. Wikimedia Commons categories
    2. English-language Wikipedia
    3. Wikidata
    4. foreign-language Wikipedias
    5. references to the World-Wide-Web
The phrase "links to" includes not only identical titles, but also similar titles, similar content and the like.

In a nutshell: HowTo integrate a completely new subject into the Wikimedia realm[edit]

  1. Upload image to Wikipedia Commons
  2. Create an apropriate Wikimedia Commons category: "Category:Carl Zeiss Batis Distagon T* 2.8/18"
  3. Create new Wikidata "Carl Zeiss Batis Distagon T* 2.8/18" ==> new key (Q106925892) was automatically created
