Tips

[edit]

Hello ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป and welcome, I want to help you with uploading files to Wikimedia Commons, as you told me that youโ€™re interested in finding free images of Vietnamese cash coins so you can build the Numista catalogue ๐Ÿ“‡, a catalogue I myself also use. The upload process for a file ๐Ÿ“ taken from another website usually looks something like this:

For Scott Semans World Coins I use {{CoinCoin.com}} which is a template I created that specifies the license, where the license is found, and how to attribute the author. Most websites tend to have copyright ยฉ notices at the bottom, but if you are interested in how to get images that were unfree on Wikimedia Commons you should read โ€œCommons:OTRSโ€.

Also importing files ๐Ÿ“ from Wikipedia's should always been done cautiously, Wikipedians arenโ€™t often as well-versed with the copyright rules of images, generally speaking Wikipedia's allow for almost anything to be uploaded under the United States of America's Fair Use law, however Fair Use allows for people to use copyrighted works, but Wikimedia Commons doesn't allow Fair Use because all works on this website should be re-unable by anyone for any purpose (including commercial). I would advise you to upload files locally to a Wikipedia if it's not free, but it would even be better to let the author e-mail ๐Ÿ“ง permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to allow anyone else to use them, that way you can also use them on Numista.

Wikipedia should be a last resort โ›ต

[edit]

Uploading an image to Wikipedia and importing an image from Wikipedia should at all times be a last resort, one of the underlying principles of all Wikimedia projects is that any word and work featured on it should be "free for export" and could even be printed in books ๐Ÿ“š. Although Wikipedia accepts almost every image (note that you should scale them down) free images get the preference as these could be re-used by others, while Fair Use images can't. Importing images from a Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons, sometimes people upload their own works with a free license to a Wikipedia, such as "w:jp:ใƒ•ใ‚กใ‚คใƒซ:Ryukyu-tsuho-1.jpg" (Link ๐Ÿ”—) on the Japanese Wikipedia is free to be imported to Wikimedia Commons as "As6022014" is the author, however thousands of files ๐Ÿ“ imported from Wikipedia's have been deleted because they turned out to be incompatible with Wikinedia Commons, the best option would be to look for free alternatives.

@BrianTheInternetSurfer: I wrote some tips for you regarding importing images from both other websites and Wikipedia, if you have any questions feel free to ask them here below this comment and I'll write โœ๐Ÿป it above. I really didn't want to nominate "File:Thuan Thien dai bao.jpg" for deletion as that would be a very "Cactus ๐ŸŒต person move" to do, but this page should clarify when you should and shouldn't import stuff from a Wikipedia, hope this helps and that you decide to stay on this platform. --Donald Trung ใ€Žๅพตๅœ‹ๅ–ฎใ€ (No Fake News ๐Ÿ’ฌ) (WikiProject Numismatics ๐Ÿ’ด) (Articles ๐Ÿ“š) 22:38, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
