MAYBELLE CARTERGIBSON L-5In 1928, with money from the Carter Family's successfulfirst recordings, nineteen-year-old Maybelle Carter paid$275 for the finest guitar she could find, this 1928 GibsonL-5 model. Until her death in 1978, “Mother Maybelle”used it on hundreds of recordings, radio and televisionprograms, and live appearances. As the first f-hole, arch-top guitar, the L-5 was designed tobe twice as loud as any flat-top guitar of the period. Carterused it to revolutionize the role of the guitar, transforming therhythm instrument into a distinctive lead void. Her signature“Carter scratch”—heard on classics such as “Keep on theSunny Side” and “Wildwood Flower”—became the most imitatedguitar style in America during the 1920s and 1930s.

Honky-tonk singer Webb Pierce paid $20,000 to
have this 1962 Pontiac Bonneville customized by
Nudie. Among its many outlandish features, note
the horseshoes on the gas and brake pedals, and
the ornamental handguns mounted on the hood
and elsewhere. The original custom job included
more than a thousand silver dollars inlaid in the
upholstery; in 1978, Pierce replaced most of the
silver pieces with alloy coins.

herself to be a highly original and sensitive songwriter
on hits such as “Coat of Many Colors” (1971), which
drew upon her Appalachian childhood. After leaving

a solo career with crossover hits, movie roles, and
massive media exposure.

O GLOBOVAMOS OUVIR O VIOLÃOELECTRICO !Henrique Britto, em nossa re-dacção, exhibindo curioso violão electrico
—— Vamos ouvir o violão electrico!
Foi com essas palavras que hontem,
à tarde, quasi á hora de encerrarmos
os nossos trabalhos, entrou-nos pela
redaccão o Sr. Henrique Britto. Vinha
mostrar-nos a novidade o violão
electrico, invento brasileiro, como não
podia deixar de ser, tratando-se do
nacionalissimo violão, mas... patentea-
do pelos americanos do norte.
E emquanto fazia a demonstração o
Sr. Henrique Brito nos deliciou com
um repertorio esplendido.
Trata-se de um apparelho ampliff-
cador adaptado ao violão especialmen-
te permittindo um volume de som per-
feliamente nitido mesmo a duzentos
metros de distancia.
Em Los Angeles, no Theatro Bel-
monte, onde Henrique Brito, deu va-
rios récitaes, foi um successo, expli-
ca-nos elle, não o queriam deixar sair
do palco.
Tambem em Chicago a aceitação
foi enorme.
P. Dutra, o idealisador do systema,
e Henrique Brito são os represententes
da Dobro Corporation, na America de
Sul, e vão exhibir a novidade nos
nossos theatros em breves dias.
THE GLOBELET'S HEAR THE ELECTRICGUITAR !Henrique Britto, in our edit-orial office, showing a curious electric guitar
—— Let's hear the electric guitar!
It was with these words that yesterday
afternoon, almost time to finish
our work, entered us by the editor
Mr. Henrique Britto. He came to
show us the novelty of the electric
guitar, a Brazilian invention,
of course, being the most
national guitar, but... patented
by North Americans.
And while he was demonstrating,
Mr. Henrique Brito delighted us with
a splendid repertoire.
It is an amplifier device
specially adapted to the guitar,
allowing a perfectly clear sound
volume even at two hundred
meters away.
In Los Angeles, at Theatro Bel-
monte, where Henrique Brito gave
several recitals, it was a success, he explains
to us, they didn't want to let him
leave the stage.
Also in Chicago the acceptance
was enormous.
P. Dutra, the creator of the system,
and Henrique Brito are the representatives
of the Dobro Corporation, in South America,
and will exhibit the novelty in
our theaters in a few days.

C. F. Martin & Co. has been building guitars for 180 years, and since 1838
in the town of Nazareth, Pennsylvania. This guitar is one of the most
famous instruments ever to have been built by C. F. Martin & Co. It was
owned and played by Eric Clapton, appearing prominently in his January
16, 1992 performance that was recorded and later televised for MTV's
series Unplugged. This performance has been credited with helping to
revive the use of the acoustic guitar in popular music. One of five guitars
used by Clapton in that performance, it was played on his acoustic
rearrangement of his megahit “Layla.” This 14-fret 000-42 was made
in 1939, during the pre-World War II era that is now considered Martin's
golden era. It is one of only 113 guitars of this model made during that
time and served as Clapton's main acoustic guitar through 1998.

and recorded the rock & roll classic “Long Tall Texan”

and Lyle Lovett, among others. In 160, Chet Atkins
encouraged Strzelecki to move to Nashville, and he
hired the Birmingham music to play bass on an Eddy
Arnold session. Through the 1980s, Strzelecki played
on bass in a wide range of styles. He can be heard on
Roy Orbison's “Oh, Pretty Woman,” George Jones's

Elvis' Birthplace
This is a scale model of the tiny "shotgun"
house in Tupelo,MS where Elvis Presly was
born on January 8, 1935. Here the Presleys
lived a simple, working class lifestyle. In
search of a better life, the Presleys moved
from Tupelo, MS to Memphis, TN.
Smokehouse[1]
This building was part of Graceland Farms well before Elvis owned
Graceland. It was possibly a pump house that was later used by Vernon as
a smokehouse to cure meat. One time Elvis decided that it would make a
good firing range and that's what it was for a short period of time.
Other than that it was used as a storage area by Elvis and his family.

On August 26th, passengers aboard the late flight from LAX to JFK were treated to a
special performance in the lounge featuring Frank Sinatra Jr. (as seen in this photograph).

ZZ TOP
The self-described “little of” band from Texas," ZZ
Top has been making high-spirited blues-based rock and
roll since 1969. They've cultivated a colorful image to go
with it, writing odes to fast cats, cheap sunglasses, sharp
threads and TV dinners, while playing fur-covered guitars
and sporting the longest beards in rock and roll. Yet for alltheir conspicuous wit, ZZ Top has stayed true to the spirit of
the blues. The three musicians — guitarist Billy Gibbons,
bassists Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard — grew up in
Texas, gaining first-hand exposure to such native legends
as Lightnin' Hopkins, T-Bone Walker and Freddie King. An
early band of Gibbons', the Moving Sidewalks, once shared
a bits with Jimi Hendrix, who praised the young guitarist on
national television.
The Texas trio toured relentlessly in their early
years and built a huge grass-roots following. They were one
of the first bands to succeed in the album-oriented radio
format. By their third album, Tres Hombres (1973), they
had crossed over to Top 40 with “La Grange.” The group
mounted increasingly ambitious shows, including a
memorable menagerie — buffaloes, buzzards and rattle-
snakes — on their Worldwide Texas Tour. ZZ Top's star
soared with the release of Eliminator (1983), an album of
witty, danceable blues-rock that launched such radio and
video hits as “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” The group
has remained popular by doing what it has done all along
straddling blues and rock, while mixing hot licks with
whimsical self-mockery “We're just a garage band that gets
to play in some real big garages,” joked bassist Hill.
ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of fame in 2004.
