This template isn't really that welcoming[edit]

I never really noticed it but this template doesn't really welcome IP users, it basically just tells them not to commit copyright © violations and/or vandalism, it doesn't really direct them to any helpful pages nor does it link them to any relevant policy pages like Template:Welcome does. It basically just encourages people to make an account but people hunting copyright violations or doing categorisations do not always want an account, neither do people who are just looking around for information so maybe the template should be re-worked to not look like either "a friendly warning" or "an advertisement for making a Wikimedia SUL account". --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:40, 24 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung: You are welcome to improve it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:51, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: , I know, but I prefer to talk these things through with others that welcome IP users, from my experience most IP users who are here for other than reporting copyright © violations tend to come here to ask either permission to use images (usually you'll find these in "user talk:" spaces) or want to give permission, linking to Commons:OTRS and Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia would be the wisest. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 13:16, 25 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal[edit]

Green = added text.
Red = text to remove.

Hello, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Thank you for safesubst:}}}ROOTPAGENAME}}|your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay.

Currently, you are editing without a username. You can continue to do so, as you are not required to log in to Commons to read and edit pages; however, logging in will result in a username being shown instead of your IP address (yours is ). Logging in does not require any personal details, and there are many other benefits for logging in, such as:

When you edit pages:

 • Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
 • If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
 • Do not add unreasonable contents into any galleries, such as copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such content or editing pages maliciously is considered vandalism.

Also feel free to ask a question on {{#if:{}|my Talk page|my Talk page}}. I will answer your questions as far as I can! You are also free to ask a question at the help desk or village pump, you could otherwise add Helpme on your talk page to ask for help here, and a volunteer should respond shortly. We also have an intuitive guide on editing if you're interested. By the way, please make sure to sign and date your talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~)."

Thank you again for contributing to the Commons.{}<!-- Template:welcomeip --><noinclude> PAGENAME </noinclude>

Discussion[edit]

I would like to propose the above changes to the template, most of these are taken from w:en:Template:Welcome-anon, and I'm not sure if could be added to Wikimedia Commons, but someone more versed in WikiCode could fix this. @Jeff G.: , do you think that these changes would be more welcoming? If someone thinks that more feedback is necessary I would notify people about this discussion at the village pump. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:58, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung: It needs more work. For instance, we don't have articles on this project.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:54, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: , apparently that's in the current version (Mobile 📱) of the template. I will remove it from the concept proposal. Apparently that's been in there for years. 😱 --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:44, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Fixed in the concept and at the actual template page. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:58, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Donald Trung: Thanks. I don't think Edit Is the right template for what you're trying to do here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:12, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: I struck out the "Help me" part from talk pages as I don't think that that's a thing here wait it is, I will add Helpme later, do you think that I need to post these changes to the village pump first or are they uncontroversial? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:21, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Add the following as well.

The same account can be used across different Wikimedia Wikis.

Vandalism warning[edit]

This template contains a vandalism warning, which contains a reference to ‘articles’ that seems to have been missed earlier:

Do not add unreasonable contents into any galleries, such as copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such content or editing pages maliciously is considered vandalism.

I replaced article's with page's, but this text still has several problems:

 1. It is not clear what the purpose of this text is. There is no corresponding text in Welcome.
 2. Unreasonable contents seems like an ugly and ambiguous phrase.
 3. Galleries is not defined. Is it interchangeable with ‘pages’? What about other things, like file descriptions?
 4. The reference to copyright seems redundant. It is also incorrect: most material, including most text, on Commons is copyrighted, even though it is freely licensed. (Speaking of that, should we say something like ‘do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly without permission’?)
 5. Vandalism implies bad faith, but that is not consistent with the rest of this text. (Exception: Vandalism is consistent with editing pages maliciously, but that is also redundant. ‘Vandalism’ and ‘malicious’ basically mean the same thing, so editing pages maliciously is considered vandalism is basically a tautology.)

Pinging @Donald Trung, Jeff G. as users involved in the discussion above. Pinging @Bastique as creator of this template and the text above. Brianjd (talk) 10:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
