Problems of this template, probably caused by wiki syntax's limited abilities[edit]

Okay, so I want to input this into this file (just for practice, I know it is quite unimportant), but no such things as headings or line breaks are allowed by this template. Is there a workaround to this that can keep this formatting?

Oh, and don't do this "for me" yourselves, please. I want all the glory, because I spent the time doing this for the community. --Johnanth (talk) 20:12, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What about this?
--Leyo 12:16, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am starting to get the hang of it. So, to clarify, does one need to put an equals sign (=) at every required line break in LaTeΧ? Help with usage of this template should be presented at its page, you know. BTW, good of you to notice the underscore missing. I just thought from the source text in Farsi (translated by Google) that "accept" was not a subscript, but I still had a reason before you go calling be a newbie and all that.
Also, you took the glory I wanted there nicely, eh Jahobr? >:-( --Johnanth (talk) 20:38, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is this question related to this template? If you have general questions concerning TeX, you may better ask them at w:Help talk:Displaying a formula. --Leyo 20:50, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, do not close this topic up just yet! The }} is sometimes used in TeX to denote multiple levels of commands, and this of course causes a problem with wiki syntax, because it closes the template. Any workarounds to these? Some formulae just cannot be [correctly] transliterated to TeX otherwise. Perhaps something like <nowiki>, eh? --Johnanth (talk) 21:48, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is enough to use a blank between TeX code and template closing brackets. You might be interested in this discussion (you might want to use Google Translator or similar). --Leyo 23:00, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong HTML code[edit]

Hi. The ‎<ce>...‎</ce> is deprecated, the right one is ‎<chem>...‎</chem>. I belive it should be fixed here, and in all translations. Then I (or somebody else) could fix all this. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IKhitron (talk • contribs) 17:45, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Upgrade of the template[edit]

The current template motivates users to propose TeX replacements even for files who are not in use. Later on these files get deletion requests ("... should not be an image."). This causes understandable disappointment, because the work of converting the image into TeX gets lost. I see the following ways to improve the Template:

  1. make clear that TeX proposals are needed/helpful IF the file is in use. This is a collaboration afford help users who are not well versed in TeX, but help may not always be needed.
  2. make clear that an unused file (because it was replaced, or never got used) may face deletion. I think we should give Users some time to work on their article. There should not be an immediate (speedy)-delete. A formula should not be treated the same as copyvios or porn. Uploading a formula happens in good faith.
  3. make the Keep parameter visible. I got {Use Tex|keep} deleted from some files because the Users didn't want the file replaced or deleted. I knew that - That's why i added the "keep" but that is not immediately visible.

This are my proposals (Bold just to mark the changes):

Use TeX without further inputs

This image shows some kind of formula that could be converted to TeX. Storing formulas as images makes it harder to change them. TeX also helps making sure that they all use the same font and size. If the file is in use and you know how to set this formula in TeX, use this template with a parameter

  • {{Use TeX|1=Here goes the formula }}
  • Tips when using this template:
    • Do put spaces in between adjacent {{s and adjacent }}s
    • Do include the 1=
    • Do not include the tags; by default: tags will be added later
    • If this is a chemical equation. add |2=chem to use tags instead
      • |2=math chem is an option if needed for color or alignment, but do include your \ces
    • Any other values in the second parameter will be ignored
    • If this image shouldn't or couldn't be replaced with TeX (even if a similar result can be achieved), use the parameter |keep=Reason to give a specific explanation why.

Files who are not in use may be deleted. Please leave courtesy period for users to write the article and use the image.
(or?)Files who are not in use for some time it may be deleted.

Use TeX with proposal 1=

This image shows some kind of formula that could be converted to TeX. Storing formulas as images makes it harder to change them. TeX also helps making sure that they all use the same font and size. A replacement has been proposed:

In your article, replace the image with:

<math>bla bla</math>

Files who are not in use may be deleted. Please leave courtesy period for users to write the article and use the image.
(or?)Files who are not in use for some time it may be deleted.
If this image shouldn't or couldn't be replaced with TeX (even if a similar result can be achieved), use the parameter |keep=Reason to give a specific explanation why.

Use TeX with Keep active

This image shows some kind of formula that can also be displayed using TeX. Storing formulas as images makes it harder to change them. TeX also helps making sure that they all use the same font and size. A replacement has been proposed:

Is created with the following code:

<math>bla bla</math>

This file shouldn't be replaced with TeX nor should it be deleted because: REASON PARAMETER TEXT IS DISPLAYED HERE

Your proposal sounds reasonable. --Leyo 22:17, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I like your improvements! --WIKImaniac 08:38, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
