Question about "main" languages[edit]

I'd like to know based on which criteria English, German, French and Spanish are the "main" language in this template. I can understand the English language position, but why the other three were chosen? Why Spanish and not Chinese? Why German and not Arabic? Why French and not Portuguese? Collapsible-ness[edit]

That’s not a bad idea; the default collapsed state should display the description in the user’s language and a [show all] link to expand the box. Currently, there are only three language versions of this template, which is why in most languages, there is only an English version displayed. Wrong grammatical tense[edit]

Template broken[edit]

This template is broken. I can only see the English caption when there is no Swedish caption (my language preference). And if there is a Swedish caption I see no caption at all. And the link to display more language has disappeared. /Ö 10:51, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I know. <rant>It is just a result of an unholy mess which is Commons’ JS scripts, maintained by everyone and noone. Somebody someday decided it is a good idea to add the multilingual description drop-down box (terrible construct as of itself, and messing with the whole page) everywhere. Which broke stuff which already cared for its own internationalization.</rant> Look around on the page, you should see the language drop-down box somewhere near the top, try “See all”, it might help. --Mormegil (talk) 13:26, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Because there is no way (well, no easy way, at the very least) you could extract description from an image description page in MediaWiki? Don’t forget an image description page is just a page like any other, MediaWiki is not able to extract even the (generally much more machine-readable) license information. (Another reason could be that the image description on the image page can contain very long and detailed description which you don’t want to use as a thumbnail caption.) --Mormegil (talk) 18:25, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean for the description. It's somehow intented to be a short description.
I also see one quick way to fix the issue for now: User:Esby/test3 is a modified copy of Template:Picture_of_the_day/layout, which disables (Note: I commented out the html code, if the fix were to be applied in the long run, it would probably be best to just remove the commented code) the primary language displaying, the hidden box and rely on the multingual javascript to do the job. That might not be what you'd consider the best, but it's still better than displaying nothing. a preview of how it looks like is available here: User:Esby/test1.
Anyway I am going to notify user:DieBuche of the issue.

Wrong 0-padding in day[edit]

File:Laura Viherva sm.JPG#Summary links the featured date "6 February 2013" to Template:Potd/2013-02#06 instead of the correct Template:Potd/2013-02#6. It's the same for all 1-digit days. They get a leading 0 but none of the linked pages I examined have the leading 0 in the section heading. It's caused by {{padleft:{{{day}}}|2|0}} in Template:Picture of the day/en and the other languages. It should just be {{{day}}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:34, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Mormegil, Andre Engels, Ed g2s, and PrimeHunter: This issue still hasn't been fixed, I believe. Please compare: Template:Potd/2007-09#17 and Template:Potd/2007-09#07. The latter doesn't link correctly. I tried applying the fix proposed above in Template:Picture of the day/es, but this didn't seem to solve the problem in the Spanish version. @Arjuno3: The original code added a leading 0 to the day parameter if it only has one digit. My suggested fix assumed the template was called without a leading 0. It appears it's often called with a leading 0 so it's not enough to omit adding a zero. An existing leading 0 has to be actively removed. I fixed Template:Picture of the day/en by replacing {{padleft:{{{day}}}|2|0}} with {{#expr:{{{day}}}}}.[6] For example, File:Coulommiers lait cru.jpg says {{picture of the day|year=2013|month=02|day=07}} which now produces the below with a correct link to Template:Potd/2013-02#7 in English. Duplicated caption[edit]

The logic that generates the caption for this template seems to be broken. In Safari, it just outputs the same caption twice:

English: Joan of Arc (1882) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882).
English: Joan of Arc (1882) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882).

In Chrome it does the same thing, but the 2nd caption is hidden behind a drop-down. Regardless of which language you are using, it just shows that one language twice. Nosferattus (talk) 17:13, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
