Reason parameter, important warning, and associated note

@Jarekt: I just noticed that with this edit to {{PD-old-X-1996}} you broke support for the reason parameter, thus also breaking the reason parameter for {{PD-old-auto-1996}}. In addition to that edit, you've also removed the warning (if reason is absent) "Note: in addition to this statement, there must be a statement on this page explaining why the work was PD on the URAA date in its source country (second case). Additionally, there must be verifiable information about previous publications of the work." This a pretty important warning. Why did you remove it? Less importantly, I also see that you removed the "For background information, see the explanations on Non-U.S. copyrights" note, which I think was valuable (but less important). I'm inclined to restore these by reverting PD-old-X-1996 to this version. Thoughts? —RP88 16:12, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

About the "reason" parameter: It seems to be unused at the moment. I created temporary maintenance category to see how it is being used by different PD-1996 templates: Category:PD-1996 (with a reason) and so far the category is empty (I am still waiting to see if it will get populated). I started discussion about it at Template_talk:PD-1996#.22date.22_and_.22reason.22_parameters, so let's try to continue it there.
The warning section removal was a mistake and thank you for alerting me. I was reusing the code from Template:PD-old-X-1923 and did not notice the differences. I will restore it. --Jarekt (talk) 17:07, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I think changing the reason parameter to a boolean parameter would be acceptable (if set to anything it would remove the warning). I'll take a look at the discussion at Template_talk:PD-1996 (I'm not watching that template, so I hadn't seen it until you pointed it out to me just now). —RP88 17:16, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and it looks like there were at least two files using the reason parameter (e.g. File:Spelterini Al Ashraf.jpg and File:Björn Gunnlaugsson by Sigurður málari.jpg) until you removed them. :-) —RP88 17:21, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My original intention was to remove it since nobody uses it and it just complicates a lot of templates. But than I thought that I should really discuss it beforehand, so I started Template_talk:PD-1996#.22date.22_and_.22reason.22_parameters. --Jarekt (talk) 17:35, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
