Template talk:PD-author

No author → no source?

Would there be any objections if I modified the template so that it would check whether the parameter (specifying the author) is filled in, and if it is not, the template would automatically include {{No source}}? --Mormegil 08:08, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

OK, I changed it.

The number of those images is probably greater than I thought; but I still thinks it's worth it – there are many really suspicious images among those. But I fear there are many that are wrong simply because they were transferred (with help of CommonsHelper or somesuch) from en: Wikipedia, and have been tagged problematically from the beginning. So, please, admins should be at least really cautious deleting those images – sometimes, the author/source information is specified somewhere else on the same page (and sometimes, the “source” specified is just a piece of crap…).

I was using {{Free screenshot|template=PD-author|Stuart Brady}}. When I look at the source, I can't figure out how that ever worked, but it did. I've found that {{Free screenshot|license={{PD-author|Stuart Brady}}}} does seem to work. TBH, if using that is acceptable, then I really don't see the point in {{Free screenshot}}'s "template" parameter... —StuartBrady 15:25, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Template ignores uselang=de

Support declensions

{{editprotected}} Please make this template support declensions (needed e.g. for Russian); this can be done by using the 2nd unnamed parameter to provide the instrumental case.

Currently, the text displayed in Russian is more or less equivalent to skipping the preposition "by" in the English text. For example, see Назаров.jpeg: in Russian, it should be saying

Это произведение было передано в общественное достояние его автором, Назаровым Михаилом Викторовичем. <…> Назаров  Михаил  Викторович  предоставил любому право использовать данное произведение в любых целях …

but shows instead

Это произведение было передано в общественное достояние его автором, Назаров  Михаил  Викторович . <…> Назаров  Михаил  Викторович  предоставил любому право использовать данное произведение в любых целях

Another solution could be to change the template's text to use the nominative case, like this:

Автор этого произведения, Назаров Михаил Викторович, передал его в общественное достояние. <…> Назаров Михаил Викторович предоставил любому право использовать данное произведение в любых целях

or, in English,

The author of this work, Назаров Михаил Викторович, has released it into the public domain. <…> Назаров Михаил Викторович grants anyone the right …

DmitTrix, This template is already used on 715k pages even if we add an extra parameter for Russian speakers for instrumental case it will not be used very widely. A better solution would be to rewrite the Russian text to nominative case even if the text is not an exact translation of English sentences. I had to do it quite often for polish translations. A third solution would be to use English version of the name "Mikhail Viktorovich Nazarov" which is not expected to be in the proper Russian declension. --Jarekt (talk) 13:22, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
