I think this template is inaccurate. For example, C-SPAN policy specifically states Committee Hearings are included in the Public Domain license, but this template states the opposite. --SVTCobra 23:29, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SVTCobra: no, it states it is free for non-commercial usage. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:30, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Clarifying what's excluded[edit]

The current phrasing:

This file is in the public domain in the United States because it is a video, video still, or audio sample from the chambers of the US House or US Senate as published by C-SPAN. Such media are the work of the US federal government and are in the public domain in the United States. See the C-SPAN copyrights and licensing policy for more details.
This does not apply to congressional committee hearings or any other federal government events other than those mentioned above; such content is free only for non-commercial use and is thus not acceptable under Commons' licensing policy.

I can't say if I was being particularly slow on the uptake, but it took me more than one reading of the second paragraph to understand what it was that "those [events] mentioned above" was intended to exclude—which is (I believe): the events being excluded are those not held in the House or Senate chambers. (Note that the default venues for different kinds of US government events may not be common knowledge to every Wikimedia consumer; specifically mentioning congressional committee hearings may actually be more confusing than clarifying.)

To avoid confusion, wouldn't it be clearer to say in the second paragraph something like "events covered by C-SPAN that were held in other locations", rather than the more roundabout "events other than those mentioned above"? NapoliRoma (talk) 05:18, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any easy way to tell when a video is or isn't from the chambers of the house or senate? Most of these videos are very tight shots of people's faces and it's tough to tell where they're actually being held. As far as I can tell, videos will list the "Hosting Organization" and "People in This Video" plus a date and brief description. Denniscabrams (talk) 16:42, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
