Size[edit]

Can something be done to make this less bulky? As is, it takes up a whole page length, making it frustrating if you're looking for the contents of the category or other information. Superm401 - Talk 03:39, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We can <small> it or make the whole thing collapsible. - Rocket000 04:56, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like it to be collapsed by default. Well, actually, I'd like it to display only the user's language, but I don't think Commons supports that. Superm401 - Talk 17:02, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That would be ideal but we don't have it implemented yet (it's on Meta, but not here). I support collapsed by default. Or we can leave just the English with a link to a page with all the translated versions. I guess we still would have to list all the languages (like with license templates) so non-English speakers would know what to click. Since each version is only a couple of lines, we wouldn't need a subpage for each; all the lang links would point to the same page. Just an idea. - Rocket000 22:28, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to improve the hatnote text[edit]

The current English text at the top of the message box switches between singular and plural of the word "file" and has a few other awkward bits. Please consider changing that text to the following:

A file is moved into or out of this category only by adding or removing the template {{Example}} to or from that file's description page. Please do not add nor remove any file to this category manually.

Thanks! —Geekdiva (talk) 21:19, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Some code in the text of the template[edit]

Hey @Verdy p: , could you please remove |*}} condition code from the template's visible part (see the example above)? I don't know how it influences the template, but it would look better without it, I suppose :D The code has appeared with the changes you've made a nearly year ago. Thanks a lot! – Pacha Tchernof (talk) 13:04, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pacha Tchernof: It is not included so it is not visible when used, it just shows the place where an extra condition may be specified in a parameter of that name.
It is visible only on the template page itself, to exhibiot the presence of the condition parameter (which was already documented, however most usages don't seem to use the condition parameter, and the code in that case does not display anything else than the code to include the given template name with its optional parameter.
Note that there's also a "ns" parameter which is set to distinguish translations for files and other pages: the intent is that medias themselves are not modified (by inserting the template in them), only their description wikipage in the File: namespace. This changes a bit the translation for clarity, used for example in French that tests the value of the "ns" parameter. verdy_p (talk) 14:29, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Verdy p: thank you for your detailed explanation! — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 16:14, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I have merged the 4 legacy translations (fi,ru,uk,zh) that complexified the {{Autocat}} template, now fully unified using the {{Image template notice}}: it is that {{Autocat}} template that uses the "condition=" parameter to display additional conditions with possibly optional parameters added. verdy_p (talk) 18:47, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's great! Thank you so much! — Pacha Tchernof (talk) 16:14, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
