Description of the subject[edit]

I don’t understand the purpose of this parameter: is it to indicate eg « focus-stack of insect » vs « focus-stack of electronics »? If so, feels to me that it should be fairly obvious from the picture itself :) And it makes things much much harder to translate − both for switching to Translate-backed translation ; and even in the end-result where the subject would not be translated either (which breaks the flow for anything except proper nouns).

Yes, I understood that much :) I meant, what is the purpose of the description parameter? Is there any particular reasons to use {{Focus stacked image|potatoes}}? It does not make sense when seeing the template translated, where it will read (eg in French) “Cette image est un empilement de mises au point d’une image de potatoes etc.” Jean-Fred (talk) 14:00, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NOTE: This image is a focus stacked image of potatoes consisting of multiple images that were merged using software. As a result, this image underwent digital manipulation which may have included blending, blurring, cloning, and colour and perspective adjustments. As a result of these adjustments, the image content may be slightly different than reality at the points where the images were combined. This manipulation is often required due to lens, perspective, and parallax distortions.

Now I'm confused. I've no idea where the word potatoes came from or how to get rid of it!! For translation I think you use Template:Focus stacked image/en Charles (talk) 11:48, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Charlesjsharp: Well, this template, {{Focus stacked image}}, has a “description” parameter, the first parameter (the doc says about it « Description of the subject »), which I set to potatoes (because why not, it’s an example). I don’t understand either why you would want to pass a description of the subject either (whether it’s potatoes, insects or anything) − that’s precisely what I’m asking you as the template creator who added that parameter :)
Sounds like there is no point to this parameter, so I’ll go ahead and remove it.
For translations, don’t worry, I know how to handle that :)

Proposal to improve the illustration of the template[edit]

Suggestion[edit]

The current picture is not very clear. Unless you click on the picture to enlarge at full resolution, nothing indicates the ladybugs at the left contains blurred parts. The arrows are also hard to identify as such. A pictogram should be immediately understandable, for any template (like {{Panorama}} for example).

Although the concept is difficult to illustrate, the proposed picture is smaller in size, and gives a better idea about the technique. A stack of frames is represented (more than two) and the content is abstract to adapt to any subject (like plants, food, architecture, animals, tools, landscapes, components or anything). Do you find the new pictogram more explicit than the current one? Please vote below. -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:38, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, your opinion is totally acceptable, Commander Keane, and thanks for sharing it here. The problem in my view is there are three ladybugs on this image, that look exactly the same (at small size). Then, when you see this template in a picture of plant or landscape, for example (like this image), it's very confusing, and it would certainly be better for many people to have no visual at all with the text, instead of three similar insects with weird arrows, that seem out of topic. Even at full size, you need quite good eyes to spot the blurred sections. But that's subjective of course. I don't use this template currently, for this reason.
