Template talk:BASA-image
Base template[edit]
I would propose to write this template based on standard {{Artwork}} template, with extra fields. Even if some info like Provenance or inscriptions might not be known at this point, that would allow users to add them in the future. Also that would allow consistent look with similar images. I was thinking about something like Template:Walters Art Museum artwork or Template:NARA-image-full. - Template:NARA-image-full was a source of inspiration for creation of this one, but this was deliberately made simpler, without so many transcluded templates in it. I'd appreciate if we don't change the template (a lot). From what you proposed, some of the fields might be inappropriate. "Exhibition history" is good one, but very few documents from BASA are really exhibited and I guess no one there keeps track of the exhibitions, if any. - Credit line is the way the document arrived in the institution (it is mostly used to give the name of the person who gave an artwork to a museum)
- I prefer the sandbox version. Using artwork template can be convenient. Even if we do not use "medium" or "inscriptions" fields now, it may be nice to have them in case someone wants to use them. I prefer also prefer normal date and author fields rather than. "Information about the original document". It looks less cluttered and translations are already done. It should be readily understandable that this info refers to the original document. --Zolo (talk) 09:06, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks Jarekt, I prefer the sandbox version too. I would like to see a more general version of MediaWiki:basa-other-versions-warn which we can add to uploads of historical material. Spiritia, You can find descriptions of all standard fields of {{Artwork}} at its page. The purpose of basing new templates on existing ones is that all the existing templates are already translated to 100's of languages (compare testcases page as viewed by Japanese or Catalan visitor). It also allows standard look of the descriptions, so people have to learn them only once. as for extra standard fields they will not be shown if they are not filed, but allow people to add them if some additional details about pieces are found beyond metadata provided by the archive. Finally we rarely use MediaWiki namespace messages on commons for template translations, since only admins can edit them they tend not to be translated very often. In this case I would propose to use a Internationalization subtemplate like Template:BArch-image/i18n or Template:NARA-image-full/I18n, for terms not found on translatewiki.net. - Jarek, I replaced my template with the one you proposed in the sandbox and tried to adapt the parameters names - for those who seemed duplicated I only left those which you propose - there was only one usage of the template by then, so it wasn't a problem. Can you check if all is fine now? Can we have this transclusion {{Institution:Bulgarian Archives State Agency}} open by default rather than hidden: three lines are not so much to be hid and the visibility of the link to the website of the Archives' is important for our collaboration. - Unfortunately all 11k+ creator and institution templates behave exactly the same: collapsed by default on file pages and un-collapsed in other namespaces. But many partner institutions feel that links to their websites are important and included them in other places. Look at a file from other resent mass upload here. In this file in addition to the link to the museum website in the institution template there are also 2 links in the source field (one to the home page and one to the page related to the artwork) one in the accession number (accession numbers if provided usually link to the museum databases) and one in license attributes. Artist parameter[edit]
@Jarekt: I've filled the |artist= parameter left “intentionally blank” by you in 2012. I do not see what the intention might have been back then and |artist= should fit better, e.g. here. Just to let you know and not to change something silently once done by intention … If I've missed something feel free to revert me here and there! - I do not remember why I set it that way. Most of the time you either use one or the other and I guess BASA description was more like "author" than "artist", but I have no objections to adding it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:18, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
