Adding other Authority Control ?

Hello,

Currently, the VIAFImporter gadget imports NLA data, but they do not appear in the display, which is either useless (to import them), or silly (to not display them).

Other data would be very useful in Authority control :

  • the ISNI that is in VIAF, and avoids confusion between homonyms
  • the Wikidata #, which will allow using Wikidata for updating LangSwitch and wikilinks (for the moment) and many other things in the future.

Tpt has built a database http://creatorlinks.wmflabs.org - (from Creators of Commons, that gathers many informations for Creators existing on january the 2nd, but it will be updated) - it is designed to allow bots to use it with API, for the purpose of updating Commons.

+1: Pro en:Wikidata (WD), pro en:National Library of Australia (NLA), and pro en:International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI). (VIAF is a great help, but in many cases it takes more than half a year till a new entry is added, and than often as a duplicate.) --Kolja21 (talk) 11:02, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
I am working on rewriting Authority control a bit to make it easier to maintain it and pages that use it. I will also add identifiers used by EN and DE versions of the template. At the moment I am trying to figure out why template code that works at en wiki does not work on commons, and all I can figure out is that the difference is in CSS file. --Jarekt (talk) 13:14, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
What a labor of love! Thanks for doing this Jarekt, Jane023 (talk) 13:07, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

@Jarekt: would you be able to add NLA to the template in the interim, and with the expectation that it should be there anyway. It is already in WD as Property:P409 (NLA identifier). Thanks  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:56, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

I started with Template:Authority control/NLA can you provide some example links?--Jarekt (talk) 03:58, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Rewrite of the template

I am done with my rewrite (mentioned above) which can be seen at Template:Authority control/sandbox. The main differences are:

  1. some new fields: used and imported from en and de wikipedias: BIBSYS, ISNI, NDL (Japanese), ORCID, RID. I did not add NLA since I do not know how to build a good link with this ID. I did not add wikidata yet, since I am still not sure if this is the best place for it and I think we need more discussion.
  2. New structure using Horizontal lists (following en wiki example) allows big simplification of the code. The use of sub-templates for each ID allows better tracking through Special:WhatLinksHere feature.
  3. New look shamelessly stolen from en wiki:
Authority control

See more at Template:Authority control/testcases. Unless there are objections I will implement those changes. --Jarekt (talk) 14:02, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

No objections ;)
Please change Normdatei (de) to Normdaten. --PigeonIP (talk) 14:20, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
✓ Done (that one was in {{Authority control tag}}) --Jarekt (talk) 14:43, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Looks good, thanks Jarekt. Code does look better, and layout is more consistent with our usual style.
May I suggest to add SUDOC, since we do have it on fr.wikipedia authority template? I can prepare the sub-template if needed. Jean-Fred (talk) 14:50, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
sure --Jarekt (talk) 15:13, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
✓ Done ({{Authority control/SUDOC}}, added to /sandbox and /testcases). Jean-Fred (talk) 16:21, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

New version is now live. --Jarekt (talk) 20:32, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Museofile

Any chance a french speaker can create some article stubs for Museofile repository, so we can link to it? --Jarekt (talk) 21:06, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I had missed this message. I have created a small stub at fr:Museofile (in French, as there is more chance that it will get expanded there). --Zolo (talk) 07:15, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks --Jarekt (talk) 11:31, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Why do bad WorldCat links get automatically generated ?

Example : Category:Bernard Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg
There are in fact multiple entries for him at Worldcat, but not with the automatically generated key. See http://www.worldcat.org/identities/find?fullName=Freyberg,%20Bernard Rcbutcher (talk) 14:17, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

VIAF based Worldcat links stooped working reliably. I disabled that functionality on polish wiki few months ago, but forgot to do it here. It is disabled now, so only LCCN based links work now. --Jarekt (talk) 19:10, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, but also LCCN based links are often merge multiple authors. I wouldn't use WorldcatID at this stage for authority control. --Kolja21 (talk) 12:55, 14 June 2013 (UTC)
I find WorldCat links very useful and in 99% linked through LCCN. I do not remember ever seeing one LCCN for multiple authors, or cases when link to WorldCat through LCCN does not work. --Jarekt (talk) 11:35, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Here is one: Creator:Cotton Milbourne. It should point there. Hamblin (talk) 09:56, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
