Automatic categorization[edit]

Joshbaumgartner, should {{Aircraft mfr/box}} always be categorizing transclusions into Category:Aircraft manufacturers? I imagine it would be better to only add that category when no country-specific one exists, so for example:

-->{{#if:{{{countrycat|}}}<!--
Y -->|{{#ifexist:Category:Aircraft manufacturers of the {{{countrycat}}}<!--
  Y -->|[[Category:Aircraft manufacturers of the {{{countrycat}}}]]<!--
  N -->|{{#ifexist:Category:Aircraft manufacturers of {{{countrycat}}}<!--
    Y -->|[[Category:Aircraft manufacturers of {{{countrycat}}}]]<!--
    E -->|}}<!--
  E -->}}<!--
E -->|[[Category:Aircraft manufacturers]]}}<!--
-->

I would change it myself, but I don't want to be too bold with a change to a long-standing categorization template. Perryprog (talk) 19:02, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Perryprog: You are correct, if there is an appropriate country cat, it should not be then in the base category as this would be an overcat violation. I've updated the template, but I also added it as a fallback in case countrycat is specified but the category does not exist. Let me know if you encounter any further issues. Display option[edit]

see example implementation at Category:Kawanishi Aircraft Company

@Perryprog: I have also noticed that this template dates to before the widespread use of {{Wikidata Infobox}}. Since the visible box is essentially duplicative of the WDIB in a lot of cases, I've added a display parameter that can be set to "no" to suppress this template's infobox display for cases where the category has a good {{Wikidata Infobox}} implemented, while retaining the categorization functionality. You may find this useful going forward. Josh (talk) 23:48, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I absolutely will find this useful. I've been going through some aviation categories, and there's a few places I've spotted that I'll likely be cleaning up soon. I suspect it's mostly a result of the changing categorical standards that have developed over time (and the different methods of doing so, mentioned on several sections of Category talk:Aircraft by registration). Regardless, your work is very much appreciated, so thank you once again. Perryprog (talk) 00:19, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
