Usage of name levant[edit]

Levant refers to the East (where the sun rises). When was this (French) name first used? Arno-nl (talk) 19:10, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The OED says 1497 for "the place where the sun rises" and 1503 in the sense used here, "levant morocco". .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 11:02, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Illustration other than stamps[edit]

I thought it would be a good idea to add illustrations other than of stamps, eg. office buildings, maps etc. This brings the subject more to life. Any additions of pictures of post offices, or other related material would be welcome.Arno-nl (talk) 10:57, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article, not a gallery[edit]

This is an article, not a Commons gallery. Articles are not permitted on Commons, see COM:Galleries. I propose removing most of the text, all of the images that are not stamps, and putting what remains into gallery format. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:55, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have to disagree, this is too black and white. in the guidelines it says: 'Galleries exist to present readers with a structured and meaningful collection of the media found here on Wikimedia Commons.' and 3: 'A brief description of the subject (if necessary)'. The descriptions are brief -we can discuss about the question if they are brief enough- and necessary for this subject is a vast and complex area. Additional: 'Galleries can do a few things that categories don't. They can show captions and information regarding each image, and group images into sections. Images in a gallery can be arranged in chronological, geographical, thematic or other informative order.' Take a look at the result so far, this is undoubtedly of philatelic value. Arno-nl (talk) 09:34, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest you look at the examples given at Commons:Galleries#Examples. They are all complex subjects, but each has only a sentence or two of text in the lead and less in the section heads. With the exception of single images in two of them, they are all in gallery format. Telling the reader about the subject is the job of WP. Commons galleries exist to display and put images in context, nothing more.
Perhaps it would be best if I simply made the changes I would make -- if you think I have gone too far, you make adjustments, and we negotiate by doing rather than in the abstract..     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 09:59, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Jim, you are the admin, someone has to be the chief of staff, anarchy (lurking) is not productive. Arno-nl (talk) 12:53, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ship cancellations[edit]

Where do we put the stamps with ship cancellations? See the one I adde: Added File:Austria Levant 1883 Sc10ship.jpg. Arno-nl (talk) 07:02, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I added a general section under Austria chapter - 'Ship mail'.Arno-nl (talk) 07:41, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

1. I have added (restored?) country related categories. The path to identify the Gallery was too long, if only Levant was referred! Remember that the hierarchy rule does not apply to Galleries. Sub-categories are allowed to highlight the well covered topics.

2. I wonder why Gallery pages of Turkey only? There are many other current countries involved. We deal here with the historical Ottoman Empire, not Turkey. Same issue when Empire of Austria is confused with Austria (only).

Too large gallery -could be moved to issuing administrations[edit]

Seems that this Gallery is too ambitious. I propose that it refers to more specific Galleries, so that only a general overview is maintained here.

:: Job done for the Austrian Levant: see (renamed) and completely reconstructed gallery Postmarks of Austrian post offices abroad. The idea is to separate high quality postmarks (there are too many forged ones), as in many cases the unused stamps are cheaper.
