Could we get this catalogue onto Wikidata?[edit]

@Maltaper: Hi there. User:Aza24 and I are looking into ways of creating a list of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci on the English Wikipedia. I'm very glad that this Commons gallery exists, and I'd like to ask: how did you create it? I'm hoping that this catalogue raisonné also exists somewhere in the form of a spreadsheet, from which Wikidata items could be generated for every artwork. Those items would then appear on a page like en:User:Ham II/Leonardo (which shows all the works by Leonardo currently on Wikidata), and I could adapt the resulting table into a Wikipedia list article.

I can see that you uploaded a lot of the images using Pattypan. I'm not familiar with that tool myself, but would that mean that there's a spreadsheet with this full catalogue? If so, would you know of a way of generating Wikidata items from it? I see that clicking the icon on the images you uploaded (e.g. drawing no. 2) allows one to create a Wikidata item for that artwork on QuickStatements. Do you know if there's a way of creating a batch of items for the whole catalogue, rather than just a single item for an individual work? (I will probably also be asking some of these things at d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings.) Thanks, Ham II (talk) 15:58, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but I just don't know how to edit how to edit Wikidata. I arranged most of files into Category:Drawings by Leonardo da Vinci by museum. --Maltaper (talk) 03:55, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Maltaper: No worries; WikiProject Sum of all painings might be able to help with the Wikidata side of things. Did Pattypan generate a spreadsheet, on Excel or something? The simple manual suggests so. Aza24 and I both have print copies of this catalogue, so it wouldn't matter how detailed the spreadsheet is, as either or both of us could add further infomation to it. Thanks again, Ham II (talk) 08:46, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The spreadsheet became data of the summary, and I didn't enter them except Artist, Source and Category.
Leonardo da Vinci catalog raisonné, 1968 contains all drawings of Leonardo da Vinci at Windsor Castle, and I uploaded them in the names with accession number, title and date. --Maltaper (talk) 09:32, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Maltaper: Do you still have both spreadsheets as Excel files? If so, would you be happy to share them with me – on Google Docs, by email or some other way – so that I could add more data to the Zoellner (2003) one? Best, Ham II (talk) 08:54, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The spreadsheets don't exit. Pattypan generates 27 columns (path ; name ; artist ; author ; title ; description ; date ; medium ; dimensions ; institution ; department ; place_of_discovery ; object_history ; exhibition_history ; credit_line ; inscriptions ; notes ; accession_number ; place_of_creation ; source ; permission ; other_versions ; references ; wikidata ; license ; partnership ; categories ). Files in Leonardo da Vinci catalog raisonné, 1968 were uploaded with data in 6 columns (path ; name ; artist ; source ; license ; categories) and 4 columns (artist ; source ; license ; categories) are same.

See File:Leonardo da Vinci - RCIN 912279, A scheme for a canal to bypass the Arno c.1503-4.jpg. You can distinguish files in the same category by name with "RCIN".

Leonardo da Vinci catalog raisonné, 1968 has more than 800 lines, you can make this spreadsheet easily by yourself. The other large sources are in Category:Codex Atlanticus (codex-atlanticus.it) and Category:Paris Manuscripts (Leonardo da Vinci).

See File:Codex Atlanticus - 000R-1.jpg. You can distinguish files in the same category by name with "000R-" or "000V-".

See File:Leonardo da Vinci - 19-547394.jpg. You can distinguish files in Category:Paris Manuscripts (Leonardo da Vinci) by name with "Leonardo da Vinci - 19-"

@Maltaper: Thanks for taking the trouble to explain. Looks as if Aza24 and I will be making either a wikitable or a spreadsheet manually, then. Aza's made a start on the former at en:User:Aza24/List of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. I'll still ask at the WikiProject about converting to Wikidata (preferably from the wikitable as that seems like less work), in case there's a way of generating lists of the same data in different configurations; I'm thinking in particular of getting the drawings in chronological order.
