please add other image search engines[edit]

please add other image search engines as well or remove google, thanks.

Why? Google is a very good search engine.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:38, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yahoo and Live Search also.. and and and...
Yeah, that would be interface bloat. I see no reason to remove Google nor add others.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 01:35, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Add $1[edit]

{{Editprotected}}

With the proposed changes on MediaWiki talk:Searchmenu-new and MediaWiki talk:Searchmenu-exists, it is now possible to add $1 in the search engine's URL's so that the specified keyword is automatically searched there when clicking on the link :

On the mayflower link, add /search.php?j=1&q=$1 like this :

http://toolserver.org/~tangotango/mayflower/search.php?j=1&q=$1

on the Google link, add +$1 after "site:upload.wikimedia.org" (instead of wikipedia.org, which will provide much more results!) like this :

http://images.google.com/images?q=site:upload.wikimedia.org+$1&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images

On the Wikiwix link, add &action=$1 like this :

http://www.wikiwix.com/index.php?disp=commons&action=&boolop=and&action=$1

✓ Done I don’t think that would work… I did something similar, which seems to work OK (even though it is a bit ugly and might use a bit of refactoring/cleanup…). --Mormegil (talk) 15:59, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes my proposal was probably not working. I tested the google link, and your version seems to work fine on my computer. Thanks. Teofilo (talk) 16:04, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. Looks good. Btw, Wikiwiki needs "img=true&" in the url to search for images. -- User:Docu at 16:11, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Google link[edit]

Google permits to search for free pictures only, by adding :

&as_rights=(cc_publicdomain%7Ccc_attribute%7Ccc_sharealike).-(cc_noncommercial%7Ccc_nonderived)

It could be used here, but I am afraid that many free pictures from commons will not be found this way (this tool seems too restrictive, lacking a broad enough indexation capability).

On the other hand, the link as it is provided now, will include fair use pictures from Wikipedia in the google search.

I am not sure what is the best solution. Teofilo (talk) 18:53, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It all depends what one wants to do with the images/result. Even if one wants to limit the results, I haven't tested if the google filtering is reliable.
tools:~magnus/fist.php could be another tool to add, but I'm not sure if one can link to it with $1 as article name pre-filled. -- User:Docu at 19:20, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tangotango search[edit]

{{Editprotected}}

It's down for quite some time, so we should probably remove the Mayflower link.

BTW The hidden list doesn't seem that convenient, maybe we should redesign it somehow. We could attempt to add links to search for, e.g., SVG media too. -- User:Docu at 08:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fully agree with the Mayflower removal, author is inactive since 2008 and who know will it be working ever again. What do you mean by "search SVG media", is it possible to narrow search by extension? --Justass (talk) 17:59, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To some extent it works by appending intitle:.svg to a search. A few others could be done by using part of category names and/or templates. -- User:Docu at 18:05, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WWix[edit]

{{Editprotected}} The second link on the right side doesn't seem to give useful results. Please remove it. -- User:Docu at 05:10, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you elaborate please ? It does seem to work. –Krinkletalk 10:08, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Try "Midway Atoll" and compare with Special:Search/Midway Atoll +Starr. -- User:Docu at 10:10, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't see the problem. The non-working thumbnails in the searchresults from WWix are redirects. –Krinkletalk 00:26, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Which searches did you try to evaluate the result? -- User:Docu at 07:39, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
works for me. Huib talk 13:13, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Which one did you try? The link works, but the results are probably at least a year old. This makes it terribly outdated. -- User:Docu at 16:52, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WWix (2)[edit]

So you tried with one request and you remove the link because the results does not taste you? Esby (talk) 08:48, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Which ones did you try? What type of result did you get? How does it compare to other search engines? -- User:Docu at 08:50, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How about reporting a possible problem than rather making to remove a link? Search enginess are more or less buggy when it comes to search images, even mayflower can return no hits when there are images to find. Basically, you could also remove all search engines because they are not working like you would they work. Esby (talk) 09:18, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you report the problem with Mayflower? -- User:Docu at 09:24, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am not the one who asked to remove a search engine here... I just reported the issue about wikiwix strange search results. Esby (talk) 09:28, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you report it? Which searches did get you valid results? -- User:Docu at 09:32, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
On Irc, to pascal martin, from Linterweb, the society maintaining wikiwix. Esby (talk) 09:53, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, but did you get valid results for any searches? -- User:Docu at 09:57, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Docu you could test it [1] or [2], I think that you don't see that it powered for answer in the native question. If we need to improve it , it is possible to us to find a better solution.Pmartin (talk) 16:01, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well Commons search in other languages gives bad results. So please reconsider the removing request. Besides, it hasn't been really discuss before removed... Otourly (talk) 17:49, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are there cases where it gives valid results? Reading Esby, it seems to be primarily a question of liking it. Is there an explanation why it gave so bad results compared to Commons? -- User:Docu at 17:53, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How about defining what is a bad result first? Esby (talk) 22:38, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see one advantage and one problem with this search tool: The result are corresponding linked with the level of interwikis between commons and the wikipedias.
  • The advantage is when someone needs an image that will be already present on a wikipedia, the tool will allow to match the request and the need easily.
  • The drawback of such system is that when there is no image used on Wikipedia, basically, you cannot use this search tool to find images you could use on an article. So this makes it more or less worthless as a search engine for non illustrated article.
Esby (talk) 17:46, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please revert your addition of WWix as there is no consensus for such actions. You can't evaluate it merely in terms of liking it.  Docu  at 18:10, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There was no consensus first to remove the link. Especially the way it was done (=asking for removal and not reporting the issue to the tool maintainers) Esby (talk) 08:26, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There was a discussion in April/May and a consensus to remove the link just as there was when we added it. BTW there is no requirement to notify the tools maintainers. Where did you get that idea from? This is Wikimedia Commons, not Google or WWix.  Docu  at 10:19, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{editprotected}}

Please reverse that edit by Esby [3]. Unstable link/no consensus for addition.  Docu  at 10:21, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any consensus previously, just your habit of doing things your own way (and blaming others) rather than fixing the source of the issue. Anyone who can consult the previous discussion can see that the invoked rationnal was 'does not work remove it', while there was a bug in the tool and that nobody reported it. Esby (talk) 12:25, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you see no consensus in the previous discussions (addition, removal, re-addition) of the link, there isn't really any reason that it should be there. Even if this seems to be an emotional issue for you, I think you should refrain from unsubstantiated personal attacks.  Docu  at 12:32, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The link has been here for at least two years. You noticed it was not working correctly, this is imo a good thing, and you immediately asked for its removal, that is imo a bad thing. You got two persons to support you, and apparently nobody cared about it on the instant, now you pretend it was consensus, even when I arrives, comment it is not the logical attitude to take and report the issue to the tool maintainer. The issue gets fixed, but apparently, you can't agree to its usefulness, so you decide it must be removed. That's definitely a nice way of seeing things. Esby (talk) 13:00, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that you think it is important that there is a link.
Why didn't it work? What was the issue? What had to be fixed?  Docu  at 06:58, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For me by leaving only the link for google search is not neutral; so you should remove them all or keep the best one. Wikiwix gives good results also for not engleish speakers, where the commons search is useless... Otourly (talk) 10:01, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Neutral? Why? This isn't an article or something, we should pick the best search engines. Rocket000 (talk) 02:33, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm nowiki'ing the edit protected. I never used the link before so I don't really care, however, I do think it's a greater loss to those who use this to remove it than it is an annoyance/clutter to those who don't use it to keep it. You can ignore the link if you think it's useless, no? The request has gone unanswered since 13 July so I don't think other admins see a consensus here one way or another.
