Remove the part of the message for gallery pages if the page is not a gallery page[edit]

editprotected

Please edit with the following code:

This will preventing this part of the message from appearing in any other namespace.

✓ Done, thanks! Waldir talk 12:02, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I find this very useful for categories too. Rocket000 (talk) 12:03, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I readded it for all namespaces (sometimes useful for files and project pages as well). Rocket000 (talk) 12:17, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Add a new warning for non-plural category naming attempts[edit]

editprotected

Please add the following code :

This will automatically warn editors who attempt to create a singular-named category, if a plural-named category is already existing. The message remains hidden in all other circumstances.

✓ Done, thanks :) --Waldir talk 12:02, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if a check for "es" plurals would be useful too. I guess when we finally get those StringFunctions installed we can add it. That will let us pluralize words ending in "y" also. Rocket000 (talk) 12:20, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To add links to these to pages and provide more specific guidance based on the namespace, please update the message with this change by copying MediaWiki talk:Newarticletext/rev1. -- User:Docu at 12:04, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, not sure 'bout that. This isn't really for content/style guidelines, it's for technical help. That's why it links to Help:Starting a new page instead of COM:G (although that help link isn't too helpful). A whole line just to tell people to add a English Wikipedia link is a little English- (and Wikipedia-) centric, don't you think? Also, the category name being in English isn't that important. It's usually people that won't understand this anyway that would make non-English categories. Besides, it's not so much the category page as it is what's added to it that makes the category harder to fix. Rocket000 (talk) 01:20, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure if there is much harm to link to COM:G in addition to Help:Starting a new page? At least one doesn't have to look for it. I'm not sure if the Help page really helps. At Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2009Jun#How to start a new page, there is a newbie question, maybe the type of reply can be worked into it.
If we add a bit more explanation in English, it's more likely that it gets localized, no? Of Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Newarticletext/, only the /de subpage has namespace specific guidance. As for the formatted interwikis, I think they are convenient. -- User:Docu at 15:55, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure about the change either, I edited the editprotected template so we don't warn administrators that there is a protected edit needed, please restore it when there is a consensus. Huib talk 18:02, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, interwiki links are convenient, and users should add them to pages, but this isn't really the place for content guidelines. Otherwise there would tons of things to add, like be sure to categorize the page, use the gallery tag, do this, do that... basically, at this point, all were trying to do is help the user edit. period. That gallery page isn't even a accepted guideline yet (I know, I wrote most of it). Translations of this message are allowed a little more flexibility (perhaps) since the only people that will see them are registered users that know enough to change their interface. Everyone else, including all IPs, see this one. Rocket000 (talk) 06:45, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a link to preload the edit view with some default content could help.
I brought is up the other day (July 25) at VP (COM:VP#Galleries_without_content) where a message addressed at people creating pages in gallery namespace, but it doesn't seem to interest "too many".
Administrators who frequently delete pages in gallery namespace might have more ideas on how to re-do the message.
I might be missing something, but currently there seems to be no link (even indirect) from this screen to either Commons:Gallery, Commons:Categories, or a page explaining how <gallery></gallery> works. I think this would be of interest to everyone, including IPs. -- User:Docu at 16:34, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, then I suggest adding one more (and only one more) line with something like "If this is your first time creating a gallery/category, please read this first". Linking to the relevant page. I'm not to confident about the effect this will have in preventing content-less galleries and such but maybe it will help a little. We can also improve COM:G and COM:C for new users by focusing on the basics (help stuff) and not letting the the "galleries vs. categories" thing, overcategorization, etc. (guideline/policy stuff) be the focus. For example, maybe the pages should start with Commons:Gallery#Starting_a_gallery and Commons:Categories#Creating_a_new_category. Rocket000 (talk) 17:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Another aspect might be that people might think being at Wikipedia rather than Commons, but I haven't seen too many pages that are about to be deleted, so I can't really say. Personally I think (this version) is "content-less", but back in 2006 it might have been the thing to do. -- User:Docu at 18:33, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
From COM:G: A single image on a page is not a gallery. ;-) Rocket000 (talk) 21:23, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that's why the other one on the same person, made by a bot, had two. ;) -- User:Docu at 23:04, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For the main namespace, how about the following (some exisiting formatting to add, <small> added here for emphasis):

 • You are now in the main name space, reserved for gallery pages (as opposed to e.g. discussion pages):
 • To start the page, begin typing in the box below. When you're done, press the "Save page" button. Your changes should be visible immediately.
 • If you are new to Commons, please read the introduction to Galleries on commons (Commons:Galleries). There is also a general tutorial on editing at Commons. Please use the sandbox for editing experiments.

 • If you have created this page in the past few minutes and it has not yet appeared, it may not be visible due to a delay in updating the database. Please wait and check again later before attempting to recreate the page.
 • If this page used to exist, it may have been deleted. Check for ASDFASDF in the deletion log and/or in deletion requests.
 • Search for ASDFASDF in Commons.

The last two lines would be formatted as currently. BTW the line "If you have created this page .." is this still useful? -- User:Docu at 08:34, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure. I personally only experience that (very very rarely) when I save like 10 pages at once using Firefox tabs and keyboard shortcuts. Even then, I simply have to refresh the page. I doubt new users would ever edit like that. Rocket000 (talk) 02:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For the category namespace, this would look like:

Commons:Categories#Creating_a_new_category

 • To start the page, begin typing in the box below. When you're done, press the "Save page" button. Your changes should be visible immediately.
 • If this is the first new category page you created, check Commons:Categories#Creating a new category.

 • If you have created this page in the past few minutes and it has not yet appeared, it may not be visible due to a delay in updating the database. Please wait and check again later before attempting to recreate the page.
 • If this page used to exist, it may have been deleted. Check for Topic in the deletion log and/or in deletion requests.
 • Category:ASDFASDFs already exists. If this final "s" is a plural mark, you might want to read category naming guidelines before creating a category without "s".
 • Search for ASDFASDF in Commons.

Formatting shouldn't change, the "final 's' " line is optional and should probably be in color. -- User:Docu at 22:37, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like it. Both of them. I agree with the thing about the "final 's'", it blends right in. Let's give it a day or two and see if anyone else comments. Rocket000 (talk) 02:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, no hurry. Given the amount of feedback we got until now (despite advertising it on VP), it's unlikely we will get many comments before it's implemented. -- User:Docu at 05:16, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, more or less to see if there's any other ideas/modifications (including new ideas either of us may get). I don't like to rush changes to system messages even if they aren't controversial. Rocket000 (talk) 15:50, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done I didn't do it exactly as above but close. The order works better for non-gallery/category pages. I left out the database line and made the "s" line bold instead of colored. Also, the horizontal lines didn't look necessary. I'm wondering if the "To start the page..." line should always be first? A little tweaking is welcomed. Rocket000 (talk) 18:49, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like the way you set it up. Thanks. With one line less, the horizontal line is not really needed. The problem with changes to mw message is that you can't really see how they look before changing them ;) -- User:Docu at 21:49, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Template migration[edit]

Editprotected It would be nice if, for the Template: namespace, this message would offer a link to, say, w:newpagename. meta:Help:Template#Use_of_templates_across_wikis might also be helpful. —SamB (talk) 23:32, 10 February 2014 (UTC) [reply]

To persuade an admin maybe state precisely what you want for . The Meta help page boils down to templates are not yet really portable, find an expert if you're stuck. I'm already lost here, when I click on Nowhere or Template:Nowhere I do not get Mediawiki:Newarticletext. –Be..anyone (talk) 17:52, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not done (yet) per Be..anyone. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:10, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Link to full log[edit]

Edit protected

"If this page used to exist, it may have been deleted. Check for Newarticletext in the deletion log and/or in deletion requests."

Change that to:

"If this page used to exist, it may have been deleted. Check for Newarticletext in the logs and/or in deletion requests."

and link that to all logs, including upload log, etc. This will allow for quicker investigation of deleted files. Often it's necessary to check the upload history and then tag or delete the user's other uploads. Guanaco (talk) 20:26, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
