Creator namespace?[edit]

Creator namespace? care to elaborate? Yonidebest Ω Talk 11:07, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standards for "place" articles[edit]

I haven't all night to examine hundreds of articles. I detect that a brief "Continent:", "Region:", and interwiki to WP may be the standard, but the third article I looked at had just a sentence about where the place is. Tried another country: same as example 3. Maybe someone can

  1. reply here directing me and others to the appropriate policy page(s);
  2. look at Issaquah, Washington (which I took pity on because it was "Wanted" on so many pages) and standardise it if necessary.

Unhelpful[edit]

This page is not very helpful as it is. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could elaborate the roles of Main: vs. Commons: namespcaes. Is Main: Exclusively reserved for Galleries and Nothing else (with the exception of Main_page presumably) and all other stuff goes to Commons? Also shouldn't the description of MediaWiki: be less mysterious? --Inkwina (talk contribs) 13:30, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed it's not very helpful, but now you're getting into policy which hasn't been fully established yet. I like to think the main namespace is only for galleries but I've seen many users (who know Commons fairly well) created project pages or cross-namespace redirects in the main space, so I don't know. - Rocket000 20:31, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with automatic categorization in Creator space[edit]

The automatic categorization that is currently required and done with {{Creator}} and {{Photographer}} is a problem that leads to people refusing to use Creator tags, or deleting them. Please see report at Commons:Village pump#Problem with Creator space. -- 19:22, 10 May 2008 62.147.36.16

Proposed new version of this page[edit]

User:Jarekt/a contains proposed new version of this page, moving most of the text into a table and adding much more links. Please comment, correct it, and unless there is opposition I will replace current version with it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:23, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes[edit]

A bunch of changes were made today, which seem largely fine (I'm not entirely sure what all of them do); the thing that concerns me is the removal of the Table of the Contents. This is really not optional, given that the key features distinguishing Commons from others Wikimedia wikis are way down the fairly long table. Rd232 (talk) 00:30, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There was a "force ToC" magic word forcing a ToC even when there are less sections than required for an ordinary ToC. If you have a sound reason to overrule MediaWiki defaults in this article you or me or anybody can add the magic word again. –Be..anyone (talk) 07:14, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Forcing a 2-section TOC isn't the point: that just gives you "Namespaces in numerical order" / "See also", which isn't particularly helpful. What's really needed, and which I added and you removed, was an additional heading for "Custom Namespaces: Unique to Wikimedia Commons", since that is the crucial difference for newcomers to Commons from other MediaWiki wikis. Adding the "Custom Namespaces: Unique to Wikimedia Commons" header into the TOC is the key navigational/informational thing. Rd232 (talk) 11:48, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Splitting the table only to inject a ==header== has some disadvantages, e.g., you did it only at one of the two "subsections" in the table at custom namespaces, but not at pseudo-namespaces. In a split table the second part cannot inherit the column widths of the first part, that's ugly. Maybe there's a trick to inject an ID without this side-effect for an explicit link, I'll try it. But clearly the relevant stuff starts right in the apparently ordinary namespaces, I didn't know gallery instead of article. The fine print of media vs. file or image in the first part is also relevant, especially here. –Be..anyone (talk) 21:41, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It worked, you can now link to [[Help:Namespaces#custom|custom namespaces]] rendered as custom namespaces from other pages. –Be..anyone (talk) 21:58, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I removed int: from the pseudo-namespace part of the table, because this is by definition no namespace as in [[int:xyzzy]]. It is also no pseudo-namespace for articles in the main namespace beginning with int:, and of course int: is also no Interwiki.

When you use {{int:xyzzy}} it is related to some magic words or parser functions used in or instead of templates. Note the curly braces (roughly: template) instead of square brackets (roughly: article). This is a fascinating topic, but sadly I'm not sure if it originally meant internal or international — both versions make sense. Close relatives of int: would be msg: (system msg) and msgnw: (msg no wiki). Instead of overloading the table with detailed Mediawiki namespace info a separate article would be very good. –Be..anyone (talk) 11:51, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Offputting[edit]

The second sentence of this "Help" page reads:

"This page, Help:Namespaces, is in the Help: namespace."

It's difficult to imagine anything more off-putting to someone looking for help. Afterbrunel (talk) 08:59, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Data: namespace[edit]

The data namespace is missing in the list. Steak (talk) 15:16, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Atlasowa: Feel free to add the Data namespace yourself. The flow namespace is currently not used (no consensus). --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:19, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Done. But it looks a bit strange. --Atlasowa (talk) 19:39, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the "strange" Look and updated all the numbers. --Jarekt (talk) 01:06, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
