Out of service (image annotator)[edit]

Image annotator is no longer displayed. Only with me? For example: [1]. -- Bwag (talk) 09:46, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bwag: To me the annotator looks juist fine in this file, in the Vector 2010 skin. There have been display errors with the Vector 2022 skin → bertux 16:45, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, correct! The Image annotator is available in Vector 2010, but not in Vector 2022. Can one expect that the annotator will also work with the Vector 2022? -- Bwag (talk) 17:15, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well I opened it in a Incognito window, thus getting the default skin, and, if one didn't click the edit source button, one would never have the slightest hint that the image had been annotated. That means if I share some annotated image and tell my friends to look for the box around Pike's Peak, they won't know what I am talking about. Jidanni (talk) 10:54, 17 March 2023 (UTC) All I know is maybe a few years from now all this will get straightened out. Jidanni (talk) 23:00, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This (or a similar) problem has been discussed often in the (even distant) past, see this archived yet unsolved thread, this current thread and User talk:Kuhni74#ImageAnnotator (in German). --Kuhni74 (talk) 08:24, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I try to view the annotations on File:2020 Arosa panorama.jpg, but can only see them when login out. Changing between vector skins doesn't help. Is it incompatible with some gadget? Enhancing999 (talk) 12:46, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it's the value in "Image size limit on file description pages" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering.
Notes appear at 800x600px, but not at the larger size I had chosen. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:57, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have the impression that this problem is still not solved. --Kuhni74 (talk) 11:05, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Randomly failing to appear on certain images[edit]

but not others regardless of skin and even for massive images. There should be a clear separate section on this on this page and a Q&A on Commons talk:FAQ also to point to the most common fixes. — LlywelynII 12:45, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think that until now, nobody understands what is happening here. --Kuhni74 (talk) 14:10, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Schönes Luftbild mit leider nicht mehr editierbaren Anmerkungen derzeit
@Kuhni74: That's true! Sometimes, not always (!), the annotations are not visible after adding the File to a category, or if you zoom in, or ... and the "Add Button" is no more there. Look to the description page of this image → (here the annotations are visible - wir können sie also wieder sichtbar machen, wenn auch die Editiermöglichkeit auf der Bildbeschreibungsseite fehlt ... Vielleicht versteht es jetzt ja jemand. --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 22:55, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@LudwigSebastianMicheler: I don't understand everything you say - anyways, the annotations and button on File:Hannover Rom -Luftaufnahmen- 2014 by-RaBoe 073.jpg are fully visible for me, not only in the description area. --Kuhni74 (talk) 17:09, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
if found out by accident, that changing the zoom factor of the browser (<ctrl>+<+> or <->) and reloading the page may bring the annotations back (here using firefox in opensuse with newest patches (115.6.0esr (64-Bit)); one has to try a bit, which zoom factor works ... -- Schusch (talk) 16:39, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
some examples: for me the following works (exclusive smaller factors - means only higher zoom factors show annotations (eg 100 % not ok, 110 % ok, 120 ok, etc)):
File:Another Day in NYC (2540375058).jpg (110 %)
File:Battery Pl Greenwich St td 30.jpg (110 %)
File:New York City (29357297561).jpg - now works with 100 % - user Pp.paul.4 move the annotations above the categories ... maybe a reason?
Just tried with the first example here (File:Battery Pl Greenwich St td 30.jpg), did not work immediately - but after moving annotations up, purging the page (action=purge) and reloading the page it works with 100 %. And only purging File:Another Day in NYC (2540375058).jpg and reloading it was enough, too ... so maybe only purging is needed? Still wondering :-) but at least a workaround ... -- Schusch (talk) 17:39, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Georg Slickers: Thank you very much for testing and this interesting idea! I tried your example files and all worked immediately without even trying the zoom hack. As I posted further above, there was some quite extensive discussion here, with a long list of files that at least once did not work for somebody. Some of them work (again) for me, some don't. I still don't have any idea what's going on. To me, it looks like a hanging process: If I close the tab or try start editing the image file (after > 5 sec.), my browser will display the message "this page is asking you to confirm that you want to leave - data you have entered may not be saved". This message usually occurs when I'm entering data on a page and try to leave it without saving. So I have the impression that the annotator script is still running (although it should be ready after about 1 sec. usually). --Kuhni74 (talk) 17:33, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
