Wikimedia Commons supports many file types, and does not support many others.

By support, it is usually meant two different things:

  • Previewing files as thumbnails, which requires development of the MediaWiki software. For example, MediaWiki did not support preview of SVG files before 2005, of TIFF files before 2010.
  • Allowing upload on Wikimedia Commons − unless there are security concerns, this does not require any development and can be enabled if there is community support.

Historically, Wikimedia Commons hasn't liked the idea of allowing uploads for formats that cannot be previewed, but from a technical perspective, the two are totally separate concerns.
