Bain copyright notice[edit]

Occasionally the images would contain a copyright symbol. This was usually on images of the most important people where Bain was worried that other news agencies would copy them, but occasionally they would appear on minor political figures.

Arriving and departing ships[edit]

One common way to photograph notable people was to board departing or arriving ships and find out who was aboard.

If no notable people could be found the photographer would take a photo of a pretty woman.

Matching an image to a news article[edit]

Most images can be dated by matching the image to a news article. The serial number in the negative is "5860-13", the 13th negative developed in batch 5860. The serial number can be used to date other images with that batch number, that cannot be matched to a news article.

Metropolitan Opera House[edit]

A common place to catch opera singers was to wait at the stage entrance to the old Metropolitan Opera House.

The Bain studio[edit]

The Bain studio was in Manhattan, New York City. Sometimes a celebrity would drop by the studio. When bored, the photographers would take photos of each other.
