Re "servers are not in jp": ok but machines are not liable for copyright infringement. The question is what's the infringing act, and it's not obvious. Nemo 18:10, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a great day for the public domain. A day delayed by 20 years due to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act], but now it's today. And either if you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent, I think we can all agree that the War on Disney (a redirect to Disney and Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act) was certainly helpful to achieve this. After all, the feud between Governor Ron DeSantis and The Walt Disney Company resulted in Disney and the Republican Party burning bridges between them, ensuring that they didn't get the bipartisan support for the 1998 extension again. Florida politics aside, let's all welcome the Mouse at Wikimedia Commons. 177.45.248.203 18:47, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"think we can all agree that the War on Disney was certainly helpful to achieve this." Anyone who believes this, has their nose so far up the American culture wars they might suffocate on it. Bipartisan support ? Disney didn't even try extending this copyright any further. If they would have, it'd have been a 3+ year effort if not more to get it done. This is why most people already knew about 3 years ago that this day was coming. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:48, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Different file formats[edit]

Where can I find I mp4 version so I can burn it to a dvd? Rabbipika (talk) 19:52, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am pretty sure the HandBrake application can be used to convert WebM files to MP4 format. https://handbrake.fr/ MasonJar55 (talk) 06:46, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Format Guidelines[edit]

Are we targeting any specific format? Or if it's supported by Commons in Commons:File types then it's okay? The current version is VP8, and Opus at 122kbps. WEBM container with Wikipedia:AV1 + Wikipedia:Opus (audio format) should be the best available format. Anonymous-232 (talk) 22:07, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Better Quality[edit]

A higher quality source file is available. Is there any interest in that being uploaded? Anonymous-232 (talk) 18:32, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

from where? Rabbipika (talk) 19:38, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This cartoon was mono because stereo sound hadn't been invented as of the cartoon's creation. JalvinWiki (talk) 11:46, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This new version comes from a Wikipedia:Blu-Ray and has been compressed with Wikipedia:AV1 at crf30 + Wikipedia:Opus (audio format) at a surprisingly low 40kbps in mono sound (I believe all versions of the toon are in mono, but can't confirm. The BR is mono.)
The video looks indistinguishable from the existing file but is much smaller. It also skips the pure black, silent frames at the start and end. 40kbps makes sense when you realize this is 100 year old early sound-recording and sound-on-film technology. I was unable to find any audible difference between the Opus and the original audio, but if someone else does, feel free to copy over the AV1 video and incorporate a higher bitrate audio track. This is by no means the final word on the short:
  1. I am not an AV1 expert and someone could encode a better version with more attention to its many settings and encoders.
  2. AV1 itself will be superceded at some point with new versions.
  3. I suspect various fans, commercial outfits, and archives already have their own film scans of the short, or are working on them. The cartoon flickers in a way I'm guessing was not how it looked in the 1920s. It could also be scanned at a higher resolution e.g. 4K. and with less compression (even the source BR shows some artifacts where thick black lines meet background). When new scans come online and have some attention placed on restoring them, this Blu-Ray rip will likely be superseded. Fans have done similar scans for other films. There is a scan here but it has a lot of issues, namely that it's already compressed by Twitter. https://archive.org/details/twitter-1741685684035887244
