Deutsch: Auf der linken Bildseite steht der heilige Gallus, dargestellt als alter Mönch in einem braunen Habit mit Tonsur, strahlendem Nimbus und rauschendem Vollbart und in der Linken den Bischofsstab, begleitet vom Bären, der gemäss Legende ein Holzscheit ins Feuer legte und vom Heiligen ein Brot bekam. Auf der rechten Seite steht der heilige Othmar im braunen Mönchshabit, in der Linken den Bischofsstab, zur rechten Seite das Weinfässchen, das der Legende nach nie leer wurde und der Mönch nicht aufhörte, mit den Armen zu teilen. Bischofsstab und Weinfässchen sind Kennzeichen des heiligen Othmar. Das zentrale Wappen ist geviertet: Der Bär steht für das Stift St. Gallen; das Lamm mit Kreuzfahne repräsentiert die Abtei St. Johann im Thurtal, die seit 1555 dem Galluskloster einverleibt war; die Dogge symbolisiert die Grafschaft Toggenburg; der Hahn mit einer Traube mit Blatt im Schnabel ist das persönliche Wappen von Abt Gallus Alt. Über dem zentralen Wappenschild schweb eine Inful mit dem Symbol für Jesus JHS und den zwei charakteristischen Bändern. Das Oberbild ist in der Mittel durch eine Säule in zwei Bildfelder getrennt. Links kniet Maria an einem Betpult mit einem aufgeschlagenen Buch vor sich, den Blick nach rechts gerichtet, wo (im rechten Bildfeld) der Erzengel Gabriel Maria ankündigt, dass sie den Herrn empfangen und gebären werde. Das Spruchband enthält die ersten Worte der Verkündigung: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLÆNA.
Français : Sur le côté gauche de l'image se trouve saint Gall, représenté comme un vieux moine en habit brun avec tonsure, nimbe rayonnant et barbe bruissante, et dans la main gauche la crosse épiscopale, accompagné de l'ours qui, selon la légende, a mis une bûche dans le feu et a reçu un pain du saint. A droite se trouve saint Othmar en habit brun de moine, avec la crosse dans la main gauche et le tonneau de vin à droite, qui, selon la légende, ne se vidait jamais et que le moine ne cessait de partager avec les pauvres. La crosse et le tonneau de vin sont les signes distinctifs de saint Othmar. Le blason central est écartelé : L'ours représente l'abbaye de Saint-Gall ; l'agneau avec un drapeau en forme de croix représente l'abbaye de Saint-Jean (St. Johann) dans la vallée de la Thur, qui était rattachée au monastère de Gallus depuis 1555 ; le dogue symbolise le comté de Toggenburg ; le coq avec une grappe de raisin bleue avec une feuille verte dans le bec est le blason personnel de l'abbé Gallus Alt. Au-dessus de l'écusson central flotte une infule avec le symbole de Jésus JHS. L'image supérieure est séparée en deux parties par une colonne. À gauche, Marie est agenouillée à un pupitre avec un livre ouvert devant elle, le regard tourné vers la droite, où (dans la partie droite) l'archange Gabriel annonce à Marie qu'elle va concevoir et donner naissance au Seigneur. English: On the left side of the picture is Saint Gall, depicted as an old monk in a brown habit with tonsure, radiant nimbus and rustling full beard and in his left hand the bishop's staff, accompanied by the bear, which according to legend put a log on the fire and received a loaf of bread from the monk. On the right stands Saint Othmar in the brown monk's habit, in his left the crosier, to the right the wine barrel which, according to legend, was never empty and the monk never stopped sharing with the poor. The crosier and wine barrel are the hallmarks of St. Othmar. The central coat of arms is quartered: The bear stands for the Abbey of St. Gall; the lamb with a cross flag represents the Abbey of St. Johann in the Thurtal, which had been incorporated into the Gallus Monastery since 1555; the mastiff symbolises the County of Toggenburg; the cockerel with a blue grape with a green leaf in its beak is the personal coat of arms of Abbot Gallus Alt. An inful with the symbol of Jesus JHS hovers above the central shield of the coat of arms. The upper picture is separated in the middle by a column into two picture fields. On the left, Mary kneels at a prayer desk with an open book in front of her, looking to the right, where (in the right panel) the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive and give birth to the Lord. The banner contains the first words of the Annunciation: AVE MARIA GRATIA PLÆNA. |
