Object type relief sculpture

Description
The sandstone relief on the west façade depicts the coat of arms of the city republic of Fribourg (black and silver). Carl Froelicher created it in 1708. The sculpture was made of molasse blocks that fit into the building but protrude, and measures approximately 280x280 cm. The carved-out motif rests on a fluted plinth and is crowned by a triangular pediment. It consists of five acanthus-wrapped medallions crowned by a diadem and presented by two erect lions, one holding a sword; in the two central medallions is the coat of arms of the State, in the uppermost the inscription "ERNEUERET 1821" (renewed 1821) and at the bottom right the signature of the sculpturer "CARL··FRELICHER·SC·". The inscription on the bottom left remind, that we see today a copy from 1991 instead the original here. The whole was gilded and painted by Pantli (or Pantly) in 1710. This is an elegant and rich work.
