A thorough search of U.S. Copyright Office records shows Thrilling Wonder Stories. Vol. 44, no. 1, Summer 1954 was published by Standard Magazines, Inc. (Copyright Registration Number B00000490065). In 1982, C B S Publications, the consumer publishing division of C B S, Inc., renewed the copyright for the magazine as proprietor of copyright in a composite work (PCW) with Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000112616 (1982-01-07). Additionally, copyright protection for "The Golden Helix" was renewed in 1982 by Theodore Sturgeon with Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000569063 (1982-02-18). No copyright renewal was made for the novelette "Time Pawn" by Philip K. Dick published in this issue and the story entered the public domain on January 1, 1983. This story should not be confused with the non-existent Startling Stories, Summer 1955 "Time Pawn" by Philip K. Dick listed in Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000190631 (1983-11-22). The 1955 "Time Pawn" appears to be a bibliographic phantom (i.e., referenced somewhere but non-existent or misattributed). The story introduction, illustrations and some other material were erased from the scan as they are possibly works made for hire and may be protected by Copyright Renewal Registration Number RE0000112616.
