Summary
[edit]DescriptionThrockmortonImpalingActon RobertHouse Molland.xcf |
English: Sculpted coat of arms on front of Robert House, Molland, Devon, being the arms of Sir Robert George Throckmorton, 8th Baronet (1800–1862) of Coughton Court in Warwickshire and of Weston Underwood, Buckinghamshire, lord of the manor of Molland, who married Elizabeth Acton, a daughter of Sir John Acton, 6th Baronet of Aldenham, Shropshire. The arms show Throckmorton Gules, on a chevron argent three bars gemelles sable, with a canton of the Red Hand of Ulster for a baronet; impaling Acton of Aldenham: Gules, semée of cross crosslets fitchée or two lions passant guardant in pale argent. Above is the crest of Throckmorton: A falcon rising argent jessed and belled or, also a second crest: An elephant's head erased sable eared or. The motto of Throckmorton is shown below on a scroll: Virtus Sola Nobilitas ("Virtue is the only nobility"). West Molland Barton, The manor house of Molland, had been let to tenants on a long lease (Quartly family) so the Throckmortons had no grand residence within their manor of Molland, which they used mainly just for occasional visits for shooting and other sports. Robert House is a very modest cottage next to the church. Perhaps he built it as his shooting box. It is unlikely he would have affixed his coat of arms to a house not occupied by himself, and the house's name suggests he had a personal connection with it. |
