Description |
English: This print representing the East India Ship 'Vernon', Geo. Denny, Commander [with] HM ships 'Edinburgh & Blenheim [off Bembridge]... Print inscribed 'This Print representing the East India Ship Vernon, George Denny, Commander, on her voyage out fitted with a Steam Engine of 30 horse power, passing HM Ships "Edinburgh" & "Blenheim", 74s, beating down Channel on the 21st of September 1839 off Benbridge [sic], Isle of Wight, is respectfully dedicated to Richard Green Esq. of Blackwall, the owner and builder of the 'Vernon', by John Lynn'. The print is hand-coloured and framed and reproduces Lynn's original oil painting of the same subject, BHC3686, though with a fourth ship's bow on the far right. The 'Vernon' in the centre flies the pre-1843 Wigram & Green house flag, with (presumably) the 'Edinburgh' on the left and 'Blenheim' on the right. See also PAH9327 and PAH9330 for information on, and other images of, the 'Vernon', built in 1838. There is another print (PAI9595) of the 'Vernon', in the NMM collection. |
