The treatment of malignant tumours by electrical currents.
Description
English: Treatment of malignant tumour by the quack medical field of electrotherapy around 1910. Method used by Riviere. An Oudin coil (right) generates a high voltage alternating current at hundreds of thousands of volts. A pointed electrode attached to the top terminal of the coil is held near the patient, producing brush discharges and streamer arcs which are played over the affected area. The patient does not feel pain because high frequency alternating electric currents above about 10 kHz do not cause the sensation of electric shock. Around the turn of the century people were fascinated by the new technology of electricity, and many believed it had miraculous curative or "vitalizing" powers. By about 1930 electrotherapy had become obsolete.
