English: Stanley and Kalulu

Albumen print in carte de visite format. Part of the Michael Graham-Stewart slavery collection. The print shows Kalulu standing serving the African explorer and adventurer Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) a drink while he sits cross-legged on the ground.

Kalulu (Ndugu M'Hali, circa 1864-77) was given to H.M. Stanley as an 8 year old by a slave trader and became his close personal companion until his death. He drowned crossing the Congo River on Stanley's 1874-77 expedition.

The National Portrait Gallery copy is titled 'Mr. Stanley in the dress he wore when he met Livingstone in Africa'.
