DescriptionSphere eversion topological events T+ and T-.webm |
English: In a sphere eversion, certain topological events occur. These topological events describe changes in the topology of the self-intersection curves of the sphere during the eversion. The topological event T+ describes the appearance of a pair of triple points between three different self-intersection curves of the deformed sphere. If three different parts of the deformed sphere intersect each other in pairs and the three parts of the sphere are sufficiently far from each other, there will be three disjoint self-intersection curves. Moving the three parts of the sphere closer to each other will first cause a single triple point to appear if two of the self-intersection curves are tangent to the third self-intersection curve. Moving the three parts past the tangency point will cause the single triple point to split into two triple points, i.e., two points where the three parts of the sphere intersect transversally. Analogously, the topological event T- describes the disappearance of a pair of triple points between three different self-intersection curves of the deformed sphere if the three parts of the sphere are pulled apart. The topological events T+ and T- can be regarded as reflections of each other with respect to time, i.e., T- can be regarded as T+ viewed backwards and vice versa.
In the video, the three different parts of the deformed sphere are visualized by topological disks that have the shape of a parabolic cylinder and two planes, respectively. In the first part, the video shows the topological event T+: The parabolic cylinder and the two planes move towards each other until the parabolic cylinder touches the intersection of the two planes in a single triple point. By continuing the relative movements, the two triple points are created. In the second part, the video shows the topological event T-: The parabolic cylinder moves away from the planes until the the two triple points are reduced to a single triple point, which then disappears. The entire sequence is repeated a second time in the video. The three different parts of the sphere are displayed as transparent surfaces in magenta, cyan (planes), and orange (parabolic cylinder). To emphasize the self-intersection curves, they are displayed as white tubes. To emphasize the triple points, they are displayed as white spheres. The terminology T+ and T- for these topological events is described in the following articles:
