Description
English: Sketch of Loch Lomond on the reverse of invitation to the President's Address, British Association for the Advancement of Science, 6 September 1876Sketch of Loch Lomond on the reverse of an invitation to the President's Address, British Association for the Advancement of Science, 6 September 1876.

This sketch of Loch Lomond, with a steamship, is by E.W. Cooke, who is best known as a marine artist. He also had scientific interests, particularly in geology and natural history, and the sketch is drawn on the reverse of an invitation to the Presidential Address of the 1876 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), held that year in Glasgow on 6 September. A manuscript note indicates that Cooke did not attend this event, but that Conrad (presumably his son, Conrad W. Cooke, who became a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology in 1878) did.

Founded in 1831 the BAAS met annually in different towns and cities across Britain and Ireland (and occasionally the overseas empire). Its mission was to bring knowledge of and interest in science to these provincial settings, as well as to provide a meeting-place for men of science across disciplines. Its main activity was the annual meeting, which consisted of popular lectures, sessions of specialist papers, social activities and excursions, one of which, on Saturday 9 September 1876, was to Loch Lomond.
