Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sheepwash, Booth. Selected information from the information panel overlooking the site: the sheepwash was constructed around 1900-1910 to replace one lost when the upper valley was flooded to create the Kinder Reservoir (at SK0588). Sheep (as many as 500 at a time) were gathered from the western side of Kinder Scout in May and brought to holding pens here before being washed (no chemicals) to remove peat before being clipped in June. They would also be gathered in September and given a sheep dip (creosote and soft soap) to kill lice. The ash tree may have determined the site by providing natural shelter for the sheep; it is believed to be over 150 years old. It was restored in 2003 and is cleaned up annually by Hayfield Civic Trust: http://www.hayfield-civic-trust.org.uk/ . They have a video of the sheepwash's history on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/3090676
