Die Doppelschleuse am Wesel-Datteln-Kanal ist die erste Station für Schiffe, die vom Rhein kommend ins weiterführende Kanalsystem einfahren. Dieser Kanal ermöglicht Anschluss an den Dortmund-Ems-Kanal, den Mittelland- und den Rhein-Herne-Kanal. Bis zur Anschlussstelle in Datteln sind 6 Staustufen zu durchfahren. Auf der 6 km langen Strecke wird dabei ein Höhenunterschied von 43 Metern bewältigt. Je nach Wasserstand des Rheins kann der Hub in der Emmelsumer Schleuse bis zu 8 Meter betragen. Das große, fast 80 Jahre alte Staubecken ist 220 Meter lang. Das kleine Becken ist fast 45 Jahre alt und halb so lang. Beide Becken sind 12 Meter breit. Der Hubvorgang im großen Becken dauert eine Stunde. Täglich passieren ca. 120 Schiffe die Schleuse. Ein Team von 12 Mitarbeitern sorgt dafür, dass der Schiffsverkehr Tag und Nacht aufrechterhalten werden kann. Geschleust wird durchgehend von montags 6 Uhr bis samstags 22 Uhr sowie sonntags von 6 bis 22 Uhr. Nahe der Schleuse wurde 1972 der Emmelsumer Hafen eingeweiht. Die hier anlegenden Schiffe bringen in erster Linie Fracht für die Aluminumverhüttung, Zellstoffe, aber auch landwirtschaftliche Forsterzeugnisse werden hier umgeschlagen.
